Default Great Tropo At Remote DTV Site in IL

While operating the new DTV remote site near Milford, IL from home in Indy early this morning, there wasn't much to find. But a little later things began to click into a higher gear. It ended up being a very productive morning with some very good tropo. I received stations from as far as Omaha, NE. Here are ten new logs over 300 miles:

KCPT 18/19, Kansas City, MO @ 376 miles
KDSM 16/17, Des Moines, IA @ 325 miles
KTAJ 21/16, St. Joseph, MO @ 379 miles
KPXE 30/50, Kansas City, MO @ 383 miles
WDAF 34/4, Kansas City, MO @ 386 miles
KDMI 19/56, Des Moines, IA @ 322 miles
    KMTV 45/3, Omaha, NE @ 443 miles
    KETV 20/7, Omaha, NE @ 443 miles
KHIN 35/36, Red Oak, IA @ 404 miles
KCTV 24/5, Kansas City, MO @ 381 miles

http://www.rabbitears.info/tvdx/one_...019DEC0/tuner0 All autoscanned stations listed at this site. I manually tuned KETV via tuner1 so it is not listed via the rabbitears listing.

Very nice! To think, if only I had an outdoor antenna (and really, the space for one), I'd be able to get at least a part of that action!

LOCATION is so key to DXing. I've been DXing DTV since Aug. 2001 (14 years!!!!) from my house on the far north side of Indianapolis and have a total of 343 stations logged. Since July 20, 2015, less than two weeks, the remote site in IL has allowed me to log a total of 189 stations. That seems amazing to me. And with the site being only 85 miles straight south of downtown Chicago, where almost all of the DTV/FM towers are located, there are a ton of signals coming from the north. This setup was a dream of Mike G. and he has made it into a wonderful location to enjoy this hobby.

This morning's tropo allowed more stations to be added to the log to end up with the current 189 stations. Here are some of the new ones:

WDCQ 15/19, Bad Axe, MI @ 288 miles
    W15BU-D 15, Johnston City, IL @ 205 miles (7 kW)
    WEWS 15/5, Cleveland, OH @ 312 miles
    WCMH 14/4, Columbus, OH @ 244 miles
KBIN 33/32, Council Bluffs, IA @ 433 miles

    Some relogs this morning included:

KCPT 18/19, Kansas City, MO @ 376 miles
    KMTV 45/3, Omaha, NE @ 443 miles
KDSM 16/17, Des Moines, IA @ 325 miles
    KETV 20/7, Omaha, NE @ 443 miles
WHO 13/13, Des Moines, IA @ 325 miles

That's some outstanding tropo!! I'm sure the flat open terrain and rural location is what is making this such an ideal spot. But it looks like you were also getting some nice catches at your home in Indy this morning, over 300 miles!! It seems that there has been a lot of the stronger tropo out that way in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Iowa... those states seem to be the hot spots for tropo, right?? I didn't quite break 200 miles here, but I came close this morning. I'm in a similar situation as you since there is way too much RF noise here living too close to the TV and FM towers, but the fact that you're getting such long distances gives me hope. However, one thing I've noticed is that tropo doesn't always work both ways... there have been times when you've reported receiving my locals, yet I've seen nothing from your area. I'm guessing terrain issues or co-channel interference.

By the way, what are you using to remotely control the rotor? That looks like something I could use.

    ... I'd get nasty E-mails, from non-believers, telling me I couldn't do what I'd already done.

While driving through this area of the midwest, I have noted that it was very flat and boring. I suppose this flat and "boring" terrain is a contributing factor to making the tropo so good. The 200' hill to my west makes things more challenging here, but it certainly doesn't stop the tropo. Ed, I've noticed whenever I get tropo, I always expect to see you posting at least double the distances I do.

Great job, Steve, at steering that ship! Remote DXing is a different kind of skill and you have it figured out.
Hey guys, this is possible for those of you in bad locations, including FM.

Ed, that was one heck of a listing from a few days in Aug. 2008. This one is not as good in under two weeks, but much better than anything I've seen from suburban Indy. This listing should reach 343 stations in less than 14 years.

More good enhancement this morning had stations coming in out to around 300 miles. These are all new logs:

    WVPX 23/23, Akron, OH @ 317 miles
WADL 39/38, Mt. Clemens, MI @ 281 miles
    WDLI 49/17, Canton, OH @ 316 miles
    WEAO 50/49, Akron, OH @ 315 miles
WLAJ 25/51, Lansing, MI @ 203 miles (Recently moved from RF 51 to 25)
    WKZT 43/23, Elizabethtown, KY @ 225 miles
    WJYL-CD 16, Jeffersonville, IN @ 183 miles (9.5 kW)
    WPGD 33/50, Hendersonville, TN @ 305 miles
    WZTV 15/17, Nashville, TN @ 305 miles
WNKY 16/40, Bowling Green, KY @ 260 miles
    WDKY 31/56, Danville, KY @ 257 miles
    WTVQ 40/36, Lexington, KY @ 247 miles
