Default Could RCTV soon return to the Venezuelan airwaves?

Well, this is huge news today.

The Interamerican Court of Human Rights today ordered the Venezuelan government to re-establish a frequency allotment for Radio Caracas Televisión, which was forced off air in 2007.

The ruling says that "the State must reestablish the concession for the frequency of electromagnetic spectrum corresponding to television channel 2 and must return the assets that were seized".

Since 2007, TVes has been broadcasting on the RCTV frequencies, after the network was pushed off air because the Chávez government wouldn't renew its concession for having a "coup-ist" attitude.

The Costa Rica-based court, part of the Organization of American States, also ordered economic reparations be paid to the owners of RCTV.

Here's one cartoonist's take on today's court ruling.

Okay, but will Maduro acquiesce? He is pretty much a continuation of the late Chavez. They both seem to be known to thumb their noses at election results, and maybe int'l law as well.

Here, thanks to Danny's saving my info, is my catch of RCTV on ch 3 back in 1995:

That's the big question. Venezuela left the IACHR recently but they must comply with the ruling in this case which was presented before Venezuela broke off. (The socialist type in Latin America has their own series of regional integration bodies and largely thumbs their nose at the "American-dominated" OAS, with institutions like CELAC.)

That 1995 snap is quite gorgeous.

I wonder if the fact that RCTV had initially refused to apply for routine license renewal (in protest of limitations on editorial content invoked by the leftists - and paving the way for their loss of license) will complicate things.
Comparing Sporadic-E skip to skip on the AM and shortwave bands is like comparing apples and oranges.

Comparing tropo to skip is like comparing apples and bacon cheeseburgers.

Apparently the court ruling requires the government to give the stations to RCTV and then hold an "open and transparent" bidding process.

I don't particularly expect much of this to happen quite the way the court wants it to, but...

Imagine what the response would be if an international court ordered the FCC to give someone a license.

Robert, as a taxpaying citiizen, I would be outraged if the FCC did anything based on an international court.

However, that bunch in Venezuela is not much on pluralism.

Christopher is a modest man, so I'll remind everybody that Christopher has many interesting TV DX photographs on TV DX Expo:

Yesterday Venezuela ruled out complying with the court order.

Diosdado Cabello, President of the National Assembly (legislature) and the #2 in chavismo, said that "Any interference of these 'sacred' international organizations, that are at the service of imperial interests, is totally and completely inadmissible! ... That sentence from the IACHR—take it, fold it up and stick it in your pocket." Cabello also reaffirmed the right of the sovereign Venezuela state to manage its own spectrum.
