... I don't see many test patterns anymore.

This is WSIL 34/3-2 Harrisburg, IL. For a while it ran an SD duplicate of it's main HD channel 34/3. Then, for a few months, it tried to be a local WX channel. (you could barely make out anything on it's local radar map and it didn't even include all of S-IL) For the past week it's been running the TP. I wonder what's next.

We see test patterns often here in the San Francisco Bay Area. When a station drops programming on a sub-channel they usually put up a test pattern until something new for programming comes along. KTNC 42.3 (RF 14) transmitting from Mt. Diablo has been transmitting this TP for over 6 months.

The only other station, I can think of, that used to run a TP on a regular basis is WDBB / WTTO...

    ... but I haven't checked, lately.

I was going to say that I wasn't sure how you could cover the entire Cape Girardeau, Paducah, Carbondale market on screen with one radar. It's a huge market!

WLFM-LP 6 in Cleveland is broadcasting a test pattern right now. It's just like the good old days of analog test patterns. My black & white TV receives it the best, so no color to show...

^ Ah but there is non-related audio, right? My WEYS LP 6 has color bars as well, along with Spanish Christian audio (Almavision).

Franken FM WPGF-LP 6 Memphis, at one time, branded itself as, "The Pig." It had a slide of a pig, along with some text, as it's video output. I don't know what it has for video, now-a-days. I haven't been able to see it for quite a while. The last time I heard WPGF it was running sports-talk // to WHBQ 560 AM.

WSIL 34/3-2 TP runs no audio programming, just a tone.

... for all of you young folks who've never seen a 'real' TP on a, vacuum tube powered, B&W TV.

The intended purpose, of a TP like this, was so you could get out your screwdrivers and 'diddle-sticks' and do a tune-up on your TV picture. There was a whole assortment of adjustments available through the back panel of the old tube-type sets. Remember to let it warm up, for an hour, before making any adjustment. :-)

The conversion to 16:9 format stretched this TP. The circles appeared true in 4:3 format.

Interesting photo Ed... I don't ever remember seeing test patterns like that.

A couple days ago, I jiggled the matching transformer on the back of my 12" black & white TV, and that seemed to bring in a clear video of WLFM-LP's test pattern which I'd never seen before. There must've been a loose wire or something. WLFM-LP doesn't seem to care about the video they're broadcasting, so for a while, there was nothing but a black screen. It's hard to see a black screen when you have a lot of static and RF crud.

I've been using this test pattern to experiment with different setups. I've found that the preamp introduces a little noise to channel 6. An FM filter which attenuates the entire FM band is a MUST. I use one which attenuates all the way down to 88.1, because I have an 88.1 just two miles away. As you can see with and without the filter, WZIP 88.1 really tears up channel 6. Here's the photos with and without the filter...

Yes, this is one of those wacky Franken FMs. I can never seem to get any audio from WLFM-LP 6 on my TV. Without an FM filter, channel 6 is completely torn up. With a multiple-notch custom filter attenuating local blowtorches 88.1, 89.7, 91.3, 94.9, and 97.5, I can see video on channel 6 but still no audio. A full band FM filter also allows me to see video on channel 6, but still no audio on the TV. I can easily hear the audio if I tune a radio to 87.75 with the same antenna. For some odd reason, the TV just can't pick it up.
