    Default Michigan DTV Tropo

With the warmup that's going on, I figured tropo season was now in full force again, so I ended up with the two usual Cleveland relogs.

I heard this tropo is supposed to get better later on today, so here's to hoping I capture more than just those two.

I was correct. WLNS returned, while WBGU stormed in stronger than I've ever received it before. WEWS returned as always and WKYC and CIII-22 also tried and failed to come in. Two more photos to add.

UPDATE: Moved my antenna into one of my closets and WSYX RF 48 Columbus, Ohio came in like a local for a minute!

As I live 156 miles from the WSYX transmitter, this is my new record as well.

Additionally, WCMZ tried and failed to come in.

UPDATE 2: Another new add in the form of WGGN RF 42 Sandusky, Ohio. Also, WJRT (or possibly WMFD) on RF 12 and WHTV attempted to come in and failed.

Nice catches Matt. WGGN is only 43 miles west of me, but it hardly ever shows up here. I've only seen it a few times in many years. WPNT 42 shows up a lot more often.

Moved the antenna back into that same closet and WCMZ, WTOL and WTVG came in with visible pictures for the first time ever. WCMZ was the strongest, WTOL was intermediate and WTVG only came in for two seconds, but during those two seconds I wasn't next to my TV. Photos:

    Default WTVG

It appears that WTOL now has somewhat of a permanent signal position where I am.

In contrast, though, WTVG almost never shows up, but last night was an exception, as for like a half hour it came in perfectly. In addition to the main subchannel, affiliated with ABC, WTVG also offers CW shows on 13.2 and Weathernation on 13.3. 13.3 is a holdover from WTVG's days as an ABC O&O.

Big bump, mainly as other interests had higher priorities mainly between the spring of 2016 and only a short while ago! For the second January in a row the weather formed tropo conditions in the Detroit area, but these were among the strongest I've ever seen. In addition to the usual Cleveland relogs of WKYC and WEWS as well as a relog of WGGN (plus WANE Fort Wayne and WUPW Toledo almost coming in), I got five new logs tonight, one of them also resulting in a new state and new distance record.

    • KDKA 25/2 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (state #4 (PA) added, surpasses WSYX as furthest station received (202 miles between Wyandotte and KDKA transmitter))
    • WHIZ 40/18 Zanesville, Ohio
    • WVIZ 26/25 Cleveland, Ohio
    • WOUC 35/44 Cambridge, Ohio
    • WRLM 47/47 Canton, Ohio

Four new logs today, all from Mid-Michigan, plus got video and audio for the first time on a station I've logged before (WUPW 46/36 Toledo, Ohio). I have also attached relogs of WLNS and WHTV.

    • WDCQ 15/19 Bad Axe, Michigan
    • WNEM 22/5 Bay City, Michigan
    • WEYI 30/25 Saginaw, Michigan
    • WSMH 16/66 Flint, Michigan

Today turned out to be a bit disappointing-all of the tropo stations were relogs (including a couple brief moments of KDKA coming in), though I did finally get picture and audio on WRLM. I did also have a couple of weird-character-encodings and near-signal-detections today though.

Good stuff. I am surprised you're able to see this... last time you mentioned you perform a channel scan for your DX. Is that still what you're doing? If so, then you're only picking up DX that the tuner finds as it sweeps past a certain channel. My preferred method is parking on a channel and waiting to see the signal bar peak above the required threshold... that way, the good stuff pops up. Regardless, you're still seeing good stuff. WOUC is my farthest 24/7 catch here in Akron. It's 69 miles south of me.

I was seeing a lot of Michigan stuff yesterday... WXMI, WOTV, WTLJ, WHTV, WLNS, WSYM, WLLA, WLAJ, WZPX, and a handful of Detroit/Windsor signals.

Actually I mentioned punching in the RF channel, as in "##-", then waiting for something to pop up (weird characters upon first punching it in, the channel box disappearing for a couple seconds before reappearing and disappearing again with a "no signal" box then appearing (that's called a near-signal detection) etc.). Sometimes the PSIP info may show up that way and sometimes when that happens video pops up too.

Seeing KDKA from Michigan sure was a surprise for me though...I couldn't even get anything from Indiana even though one of the Indianapolis-area channels was continually being logged by one of the Ann Arbor tuners all day yesterday.
