    Default Basic FM DXing

I'm not really an FM DXer (I don't keep a log) but, on occasion, I'll have a look around the band. Since my big VHF / FM antenna is broken (and lying on the floor of the garage, atm) I thought I'd try some basic FM DXing. I rigged up a 1/2 wavelength, vertical dipole, in a 1st floor, south facing, window...

Yesterday, I had the receiver parked on 88.9 (a, sorta, open frequency) when it went crazy. There were as many as five different formats all quickly trading places. I only managed to ID two of them...

WERS Boston, MA (4 kw) at 985 mi.

WJMJ Hartford, CT (6.2 kw) at 900 mi.

... At one point I had to laugh out loud at the jumbled mess I was hearing on 88.9.

A bit later I heard several Spanish speaking stations (none of which were IDed) before the E-skip finally fizzled out.

Ed, jumbled messes were the order of the day here on the 13th.... easily driving a sane DXer crazy.... you laughed, I screamed! In one 8 or 9 minute spell, I had at least five stations in the jumble on 106.7..... WZNX Sullivan, IL for a new log, WZZL Reidland, Ky, ESPN possibly WFGA Hicksville, OH (Ft. Wayne), WPPN Spanish Des Plaines, IL and KRTI Energy 106.7 Grinnell IA. And 106.7 is not a "sorta open frequency" here.... WLTW New York to my south comes in fine all day, just below the threshold of locking on to HD. Fortunately, the DX was coming from a different direction, so WLTW was weakened some with the antenna West.

Another E-skip feeding frenzy on the evening of June 30th produced three more...

88.7 WDLV Fort Myers, FL (75 kw)

92.7 WAVW Stuart, FL (50 kw)

93.7 WGYL Vero Beach, FL (50 kw)

... These stations are in the 800 mile range.

Several other stations were heard but not IDed.

A few things I'm learning about FM DXing...

Stations, in the low end of the band, only ID once a week.

Stations, in the rest of the band, only ID with some stupid catch-word / slogan... "The- Bug, Farm, Mix, Rocker, Mule, Big Dog, Mellow, Smooth, Soft Rock Peach, Vibe, Fire Engine, Throw-out Bearing Grinder, Aardvark Pineapple, etc."

There are 27,000,004 K-Love stations only one of which IDed and it was a local.

If a station should actually ID it's done as fast and as unintelligible as possible...

    "This is W-prnflmbfszqxrvpif"

... I need to get one of those radios that'll decode the RDS, QVC, IUD, PSIP or whatever it is you call the info data you serious FMers use to 'cheat.' :-)

Yesterday evening brought E-skip from the southwest this time...

Again, with the receiver parked on 88.9, I had several fade-ups of what I'm fairly sure was...

    KENM Tucumcari, N.M. (3 kw) 870-ish mi.

... I never heard a 'legal' ID but it had that Public Radio sound to it and just kept yakking about all things New Mexico. If I were keeping a log this one would not go in it but, if I had to place a bet I'd put a couple of buck$ on it.

Nice going on (6/13) WJMJ 88.9 Ed! That's one of my locals and gets out very well. I think I may have heard a couple of KYs on that date also.

Thanks Mike... All the more interesting considering the antenna being used. You probably did hear some of my locals... Chris (post #2) had WZZL which isn't too far from here.
