Ed, I find FTA satellite fascinating. I think it's cool to see broadcasts from different countries around the world. It feels like DXing in a way (even though it's not) because you're viewing exotic broadcasts that are not local. That's what I've always viewed DXing as... being able to view programming and channels that you wouldn't normally be able to receive. DX in my mind is actually being able to view the programming, but it seems like this is becoming far less frequent now that autologgers are replacing human DXers. A number or call letters on a map is boring in comparison to photo or video of the DX captured. I grew up on analog TV, and part of the fun was watching local programming in order to get local IDs.

If you like watching TV from around the world, try streaming TV. With just a Roku box connected to your TV via HDMI cable you can watch just about anything from anywhere. The Channel Pear app for Roku has more international TV then you'll ever be able to watch. Some of it is 720p but some is still 480. The Roku is not just for Netflix and Hulu...it's much more than that.

Ed, it has been quite a few years since I've played around with this hobby of FTA satellite. I got frustrated because the amount of English programming was rapidly decreasing, and there really was not anything exciting available. I remember at one point, I discovered that there were 3 local Phoenix Arizona network affiliates unencrypted at 118.8 degrees. This was available for several months. If I remember correctly, it was local channels Fox 10, CBS 12, and ABC 15. These eventually disappeared or went scrambled.

I thought I remember seeing several unencryped CBC locals at 107.3 degrees listed somewhere, but I would have needed a C-band BUD for that. I only had a small Ku dish. After a while, I just kinda gave up my motorized dish for a stationary dish aimed at Hispasat. Pointing there, I can get all the Cuban propaganda.

I was kinda hoping for more options with English network programming, but that's just simply not available.

Andrew... I do remember there were often local area 'clusters' of OTA TV that could be found on satellite... I seem to remember some Arkansas stations at one time. Satellite TV (much like OTA TV, lately) has always been a moving target... Just when you've got all the latest equipment and have the bands all figured out along comes the next change... You're always playing 'catch-up' with sat-TV.

Funny story... Many years ago there were some OTA stations on C-band sat. Some of these were CBS affiliates. My local CBS, KFVS 12 Cape Girardeau MO, used to run ads scolding people for watching CBS on sat rather than their OTA signal. So, I sent them a VHS tape, chocked full of CBS stations, that I'd recorded from E-skip and tropo. I explained they were all OTA signals and asked them which one they wanted me to watch. I never got any reply from KFVS.
