Thread: DX in dreams

I've dreamt at least once of the entire UHF band loaded with tropo catches on every channel, with stations running Saturday morning kids shows. Most of the stations were southern or Mexican. For the most part, tuning from one station to another was seemless, without evidence of a channel being changed, as most on the dial belonged to the same network

I had a dream yesterday. Went sumpn like this.....

My aunt & her 2 daughters (my cousins) came to my house to visit. I was watching a baseball game on ch 42 (which in reality is a local PBS). I suddenly saw a ghost-image with the word "cubavision" (just like Cubavision's logo in Cuba). So I started flipping around channels. Ch 15 seemed the best (there is a ch 15 in Havana, Canal Educativo 2).

I called them over to show them what I was seeing. Ch 15 actually improved in reception. I think I was explaining how DX works.

My aunt said to her daughters, "Come on, I think it's time to go."

I had four dreams on four separate occasions early in the 2010s.
One was where I was seeing a UnID CBS station on analog channel 5.
Another was when I received an UnID Canadian station.
Next, I received a translator station of KSNV channel 3 Las Vegas, NV, on analog channel 39.
After that one, I received KATV 7.1, Little Rock, AR.
It would be interesting if I actually catch the station here, as KATV and Tulsa, OK station KOKI virtual channel 23 both use RF 22.

I remember a few DX dreams myself. Hardly any involved TV DX, but the one from Rob Grant about getting KAYS-7 30 years in the future was very odd. Which, ahem, means one of my dreams...
Dream #1. I was tuning around on my OLD Sangean ATS-909, and stumbled across a 94.3 over the KMPS IBOC, playing adult hits. Suddenly, there was an ID, clear as day for "Northern Colorado's 94.3 Max FM", which was KMAX-FM Wellington, CO. Never have I picked that station up in Seattle or Yakima (KMPS IBOC former, major KATS 94.5 splatter here!) But it's so weird how a dream can have a "realistic" ID to it. I don't remember getting any other stations in that dream.
Dream #2. Picking up every Los Angeles FM, like a local (KLOS and KCBS come to mind) as well as multiple Mexicans on channel 5. Probably a few 2xEs as well on 5. This was also Dream #3, but without the channel 5 and had top of dial Los Angeles (about a year ago).
Dream #4. Picking up MUF 104 from AZ with loads of Portland tropo in and out. This was in 2012 when the skip would never, ever come until 7/18...

    I read that KAYS-7 became KBSH-7 in 1989.

This is kinda bump-worthy I think.

Had an odd dream a few hours ago....was getting a beautiful color DX image on ch 3 in SS I guess, but there was no logo bug at all to help. (Also was living at my childhood home I think!)....anyway I swung the antenna different points south, but nothing "favoring" although it had to be south.

I saw whatever text onscreen that I figured would help. (I did see "TA" but it didn't quite resemble the Dominican Republic one.) Went online to Google the text....as I remember, the first "hit" was a DX image which was exactly what I saw on TV!

    Funny thing, dreams.

I haven't done the lucid dreaming thing in a while. But reading things in dreams is always a treat. (Or checking a watch... a common technique.) I wonder what a full screen of text on your channel 3 would've rambled on about... probably a bunch of random spanish words you vaguely recognize.

    I'm having a nightmare...

I move to the wide open spaces and have the run of channels 2 through 83 with only one 24/7 local. 500 mile tropo is a daily occurrence. DX antennas are plentiful. I have the keys to the TV DX candy store. And then...

Channels 70 through 83 are swiped for cell phones.

New local TV stations begin operation.

100 KW FM (4 miles from the house) goes on air.

A Cell Site is built less than a mile from the house.

More local stations are running 24/7.

Lightning strikes wipe out pre-amps, VCRs, TVs, etc.

Channels 52 through 69 are swiped for cell phones, etc.

    Format change-over to DTV.

    Ice storm wipes out antennas.

All local stations now running 24/7.

Several battles with local power company over noisy power lines.

Local cell site begins 4G LTE (700+ MHz) operation. (Big QRM)

Canadian and Mexican analogs are going or gone.

Good DX antennas are getting hard to find.

I'm not an FM DXer but even I notice the FM band is getting over-crowded

FCC proposes taking channels 30? through 51 for more cell / data expansion.

FCC proposes repacking all of OTA TV into channels 2 through 30?

Oh, and let's switch to another DTV format while we're at it.

... The sad part is, my nightmare is real.

This location was always crowded but I had holes in many places and got some great FM Dx over the years. Now it's completely trashed. There really isn't any point to any serious dxing, so I don't. The only excitement I have is when I take my laptop and SDRplay out on vacation, once or twice a year.

TV is pretty much clogged with useless Spanish channels with terrible quality or blasting audio. Hardly anything open here and repacking will make it worse.

When I was young I thought that DXing would be a lifelong hobby. It's not turning out that way. But that's okay.

My waking DX nightmare, here, is the proliferation of pirates, and K-Love-style christian broadcasters popping up like mushrooms, as LPs or on translators on frequencies that already have stations I listen to. Some of the stations I listen to are out of market, but, come in like locals consistantly, and they get obliterated. So far, I haven't actually had an actual DX nightmare, though.
