    Mostly Mexican MWDX to Enid OK, March 10-16, 2017

    These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also VHF/UHF, sometimes utility, ham, which may be found in several archives without much delay, such as
    http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

    All times and dates strictly UT. Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan stock caradio as specified; ICR-75 E-W longwire

    ** MEXICO. 1300, UT Monday March 13 at 0436, Radio Mexicana ID from XEP, and music, evidently not running `La Hora Nacional` now as would be expected Sundays at 10 pm local, since Juárez has certainly copied El Paso by going on MDT of UT -6, unlike further south in México, no DST until April 2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    Note: this report concerns logs before the imposition of DST, so EST conversions are still called for. A separate report for the EDT period will follow.

    All times and dates strictly UT [5 hours ahead of `ELT` during EST; when changing times one must also change the dates for events in the 00-05 UT period to the previous date by ELT].

    Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan stock caradio as specified; IC-R75 with E-W longwire

    These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of USA [if any], unidentified [if any], separated by ======= Within each, they are in frequency order

    ** NEWFOUNDLAND. 2598-USB, March 12 at 0135 UT, roboYL in English with marine weather, citing some UTCs and some Eastern Standards; vs S9+10 lightning crashes. Scheduled starting at 0137 UT is VOK, Labrador via both Cartwright and Hopedale, but if timing is precise, preceding it from 0107 UT is VOK via St Anthony site. Nothing on 2749 now, but see CANADA. I THINK all these stay on same UT schedules despite imposition of DST, right? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** CANADA. 2749-USB, March 12 at 0152 UT, roboYL with maritime weather in English, S9+10 vs QRN level merely S9; VCS Halifax via Chebogue NS site scheduled starting at 0140 UT. Nothing heard on 2598 now, but see NEWFOUNDLAND earlier (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ==========

    ** OKLAHOMA. 1520, March 12 at 0155 UT, KOKC with a gun show explaining exactly where to shoot people to cause the most damage. Good to know! Outro as `Frontlines of Freedom` on a growing network of outlets (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ==========

    ** U S A. 1020, KMMQ Plattsmouth, NE: regarding my log of this station mentioning ESPN Deportes, Wayne Heinen, NRC AM Log Editor, checked with Andy Ruback of the NRG group in Omaha owning it, who says it is still same format as before, ``Regional Mexican``. Local DXers Carl Mann and Rick Dau agree. So what I heard must have been a fleeting reference for some reason (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** U S A. 1450, March 10 at 0619 UT bandscan on the E-W antenna, briefly atop the mush is an ad with an address in Portales, so it`s KSEL NM, which is only 950 instead of the usual 1000 graveyard watts. KSEL is on the ``second ring`` of 1450 stations from here beyond Woodward and Altus, along with KLMX Clayton NM. Portales distance 344 miles = 553 km, making me grateful for such a log from one of the gateways to NM. BTW, KSEL used to be the call of a Lubbock station, 950 until 1987y, now KJTV (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of USA [if any], unidentified [if any], separated by ======= Within each, they are in frequency order

    ** U S A. 1540.11, March 13 at 0434 UT, off-frequency het loops about SSE/NNW, not much signal from KXEL, and with notching on the NRD-545, separable from various signals on 1540.0. Playing classic rock music. I bet it`s KGBC Galveston TX, which for many months in 2015-2016 was off frequency, but no het lately, presumably temporarily fixed until now. At 0434 UT, partial ID as ``##101.5 FM & 1540 AM``, refers to a website ending in 1015.com. Researching later:

    WTFDA FM Database confirms the 1540/101.5 translator for KGBC:
    ``K268DE // KGBC-1540 101.5 GALVESTON TX 0.22 0.22 0.0 0.0 29-18-52 94-48-19 Chinese ETHNIC/ASIAN``

    It used to be Chinese with CRI relay // 1520 KYND but that was done long ago. Wikipedia has some info, starting with newer? but still outdated format:

    ``The current format is a business talk format.[5] [sic] In 2016, after 69 years of broadcasting as "1540 KGBC", Siga changed the station's image to reflect the new 101.5 translator dial position attached to the heritage AM``

    Then I search out this website unknown to Wikipedia:
    http://www.gc1540.com/
    which still exists but refers to www.gc1015fm.com --- GC stands for Gulf Coast.

    ``Visit our Facebook page
    Check out the Live Surf Cam Courtesy of Gtownsurf.com
    K242BG 101.5 fm (Galveston) and KGBC 1540 am (Galveston & Houston), keeping Galveston Island and Galveston County connected with great music and entertainment Owned and operated by SIGA Broadcasting on Galveston Island Texas``

    The AM appendage still claims to broadcast on 1540, rather than 1540.11 kHz! Clearly it`s mainly music now, with local talk, and not particularly business. Check out the Local Programs tab (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1869, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    Glenn, KGBC has been running an Oldies format for a few months now. The 101.5 translator is fairly new, but covers much less area than the daytime AM signal. No het on 1540 when checked recently. Unsure if Oldies is "permanent" as the new FM outlet may have convinced Siga to try something other than a succession of brokered formats. The nighttime KGBC signal doesn't make it to my QTH, some 70 miles away --- buried in the 1540 pileup (Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas, 0021 UT March 14, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    1540.11, March 15 at 0109 UT, no het from KGBC Galveston TX, as heard a binite ago, so presumably back on 1540.00 (or off), with 1540 dominated by far-right talkhost presumed KXEL, and TexMexmx in background, from KEDA San Antonio. KGBC might have been on 2.5 kW daypower then too instead of 0.25 kW nite (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1869, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of USA [if any], unidentified [if any], separated by ======= Within each, they are in frequency order [but only USA this week]

    ** U S A. 700, March 17 at 1257 UT with WLW still in but nulled, Texas ads including one in Sugarland, mentions an FM ID in passing, and ``Voice of Texas``. Therefore it is not my closer one, KHSE in The Metroplex, which is Spanish religion, but the farther one from Houston market, KSEV Tomball, 15/1 kW U4, with such a slogan in NRC AM Log. Day pattern has less of a null toward us than KHSE. Can`t find any FM for it listed, not even mentioned on own website, but clearly a far-right extremist outlet (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** U S A. 740, March 17 at 1258 UT, KTRH Houston with TX ads, I-45 mentions, is making 72/min SAH with KRMG Tulsa = 1.2 Hz; even tho 50 kW, day and night patterns are supposed to have deep nulls toward OK, so I again suspect they are out of whack (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** U S A. 910, March 17 at 1301 UT, NPR News from Culver City, California, so has to be WSUI Iowa City IA --- a public radio station the Trumpsters would love to do away with (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** U S A. 1020, March 17 at 1303 UT, Mexmx, ``La Estación de la Raza`` by SHVA, i.e. KMMQ Plattsmouth NE (Omaha market), not to be construed as racist? What if Anglos were to slogan that way? With nearby KOKP OK nulled as much as possible, and no sign of KCKN Roswell now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** U S A. 1260, March 17 at 1307 UT, ``Radio de la comunidad latina de Iowa``, many ads mentioning Des Moines, 515 area codes, ``La Reina, y nada más``, música. 5 kW KDLF Boone IA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** MEXICO. 730, March 23 at 1228, ID for ``107.1 FM, Fiesta, y 730 AM``, i.e. XEHB, Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, 50/1 kW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** MEXICO. 980, March 23 at 1230, which is Enid sunrise, phone numbers, ``es la FQ, una estación del Instituto Mexicano de la Radio``, i.e. XEFQ, Cananea, Sonora, 2.5/0.5 kW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search March 17: finally I awaken two minutes before sunrise here so check it out at 1237-1239:
    774, 693 and 594 from NW, presumably Japan; and 702 from WSW, presumably Australia (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search, March 23, UT:
    At 1140: 684-WSW, 702-WSW, 774-WSW, 828-WSW
    At 1213: 1098-W
    At 1222: 1548-WSW, 774-NW
    At 1224: 1098-W

    That`s an interesting group: WSW ones would be Australia or NZ, where there are no stations greater than 10 kW on 684 & 828. Note how 774 produced both DU and Asia, i.e. Australia and later Japan. 1098 of course is the Marshall Islands carrier. And 1548, 4QD Emerald, Queensland which has been making it with audio as far as IL and MI lately. Enid sunrise today 1230 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ** CANADA. 2749-USB, March 26 at 0158 UT, roboYL in French with day-by-day forecasts of some marine weather, at S9 until off at 0200* UT. I still can`t catch a definite ID, if any, but Canadian CG shows the latest 2749 transmission is VCS Halifax from Chebogue NS site starting at 0140 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ============

    ** U S A. 730, March 27 at 0446 UT, unusual to hear something in English rather than Korean or Spanish on 730; talk show with weird subject, guest mentions Archimedes, radio-telemetry, Noah`s Ark, higher dimensions, harmonic transmitters (? I could use some of those!). Looking for // I finally find one on 1170 KFAQ which is running 30 seconds ahead of 730. No SS CCI until something fades up at 0454 UT, and talkshow is C2CAM with George Noory, guest David Sereda, 0457 UT wrapup, apparent music fill, but no ID in QRM by 0500 UT. (Sereda had been a wacko guest numerous times, but not scheduled for 3/26; an old rerun, I suppose.)

    My first guess is KDAZ Albuquerque, but not on the C2C affiliate list, just 1600 there. C2CAM website, and NRC AM Log show the *only* 730 affil is: WWTK Lake Placid FL, address in Sebring, which is U4 500/340 watts. Day and night patterns are NNW/SSE, not favorable for here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    XENU has not migrated — though it is highly likely to be a new-round migrant so it will probably disappear in the next few years.

    XERUV is done (permit discontinuity where the permitholder actually will wait to get a new concession!). There's also XEREL Morelia (Michoacán state network, not // FM) and XEBG Tijuana.

    ** OKLAHOMA. 930, UT Saturday April 1 at 0453 UT, Spanish here is still WKY, but it`s sports talk, not music! Long string of promos, jingles from ESPN Deportes, national feed giving times in Pacific and Eastern, and who cares about the Great Center of America, let alone the Mountains?? During otherwise Spanish, the letters ESPN are always pronounced in English to avoid invoking images of penises, altho such a macho connexion would seem to be apt. How much coverage of women`s sports is there, anyway?

    0457 UT local ads including a Dodge dealer in Midwest City, Goodwill Industries (in Spanish they should say benevolencia or buena voluntad); PSAs for how to impress girls, drunk driving. I keep listening for the ToH ID at 0500 UT, which says ``WKY, Oklahoma City, 930AM, WKY``. The call letters are pronounced in English, altho they don`t have to be (but doble-ve ka i griega is a bit more cumbersome, less so doble-u ka ye). {There was never a worse callsign for a SS station, all three letters being ``foreign`` to Spanish!}

    No mention of ``La Indomable`` which has been its brand for eight+ years already, and back to ESPND. Recheck at 1435 UT, still Spanish sports talk, no music!

    Radio-locator.com still has its format as ``Regional Mexican``, i.e. frenetic oom-pah-pah music, a staple on our dials for years. The website still exists under the old name
    http://www.laindomable.com/
    but all the Noticias on the homepage are about sports, notably including European soccer games. How much of an audience in OK is there for that, in Spanish to boot?? But it still plugs at least one DJ program, outdated? `El Show de Mandril`, L-V 7-12 am (meaning before noon?). Will have to wait until April 3 morning to confirm whether that still exist. I suspect not, as radio stations have this all-or-nothing mentality about formatting. Or is this a bad joke for April 1?

    Newspaper ad from November, 2014, DJs presumably jobless now:
    http://www.w4uvh.net/WKY930AM-ad.jpg
    Their nicknames meant Roadrunner, the Little Doll, the International.

    If you search on ESPN Deportes you get stuff about the cable TV channel, finally leading to this:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESPN_Deportes_Radio
    which shows affiliates in only 18 states, of course not including Oclajoma. It links to website
    http://espndeportes.espn.com/radio/index
    which turns out to be a File Not Found. Grrr.

    Also nothing recent in radioinsight or radiodiscussions concerning WKY

    DXLD archives: see
    http://www.w4uvh.net/dxld9004.txt
    at the beginning of 2009y for reports on when La Indomable started, after some shorter-lived format attempts on 930. Refers to ESPND being on KINB 105.3, apparently a related station, so what`s on 105.3 now? Sports talk in English, at 1518 UT April 1 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1872, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ===============

    ** U S A. 1550, April 3 at 0352 UT, ``La Raza, ciento ---- punto uno`` after music not // 1570 XERF La Hora Nacional, so two clues this is Unitedstatesian, not Mexican: true dentro-mejicanos don`t need to brand themselves as ``La Raza``. NRC AM Log shows the only SS on 1550 as La Raza is KMRI West Valley City UT (SLC), 10000/340 watts U1, but nothing about an FM. Then I search the WTFDA FM database for a Raza on 1550 with any FM, but no hits. Nor does Radio-locater but leads to its website http://www.larazamedia.com/ which does display 107.1 only in the form of some listener`s greeting. ``La Raza 107.1 es la mejor estacion de Utah" Saul Venegas, Salt Lake City UT``. This is probably my unID of March 27.

    Going back to the WTFDA FM DB for 107.1 in UT, we find this for La Raza: KEGH Woodruff UT, 89 kW, 647m, but also low powers with different coordinates KEGH-FM1 in Ogden, -FM2 in Bountiful, -FM3 in SLC itself, -FM4 in Provo. But never any connexion shown with 1550 KMRI. Or 1660 KXOL!

    Previous reports had 1550 simulcasting 1660 KXOL in UT. Neil Kazaross, IL, posted on March 20, 2017: ``You may want to listen to 1550 if you need KMRI from Utah. SS mx and the gal gives a 3 station ID at about 1158:30 UTC. She mentioned 1660 Brigham City but I thought they were gone?``

    KXOL is gone from the FCC AM Query database, not even as DKXOL, FWIW. The IRCA archive has a few hits on KMRI, and lots more of KXOL, but in the latter case, none since 2015y. As for this log, soon losing out to soul music in English. I could believe KMRI is really on night power of 340 watts instead of 10 kW day (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
