Domestic MWDX to Enid OK, February 3-9, 2017

All times and dates strictly UT [5 hours ahead of `ELT` during EST; when changing times one must also change the dates for events in the 00-05 UT period to the previous date by ELT].

Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan stock caradio as specified; IC-R75 with E-W longwire

These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also VHF/UHF, sometimes, utility, ham, which may be found in several archives without much delay, such as
    http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and publications in DX LISTENING DIGEST:

All my MW DX reports starting August 2011 are archived in this forum with open access:
    http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.p...-Hauser/page55
[over 196,000 views as of Feb 9, 2017]

These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of USA, unidentified [if any], separated by ======= Within each, they are in frequency order

[Note: altho MW clubs are reluctant to publish logs like the following, I classify them as MWBC, since: MW really extends up to 3000 kHz; and, these are one-way: broadcasts, not two-way. This also applies to harmonics of MW stations falling below 3000 kHz; in fact, even above 3000 such spurious transmissions are certainly relevant to MW]

** CANADA. 2749-USB, Feb 4 at 0454 UT, YL robotic English marine weather, VP S7 at same level as noise.

2598-USB, Feb 4 at 0455 UT, sounds like same YL with robotic marine weather, gale warning, mentions times in EST, and then AST; slow fades past 0458 UT. Surprised to find this stronger than 2749, not usually the case with NS vs NL distances. Don`t have two receivers at hand to match them, but at this hour may well be // and both from Québec as per Canadian CG listings, from most recent start times, and nothing further after these for a few hours:
    0437 UT, 2598, VCF Les Escoumins, site: Natashquan QC 50 08 40 -61 48 00
    0437 UT, 2749, VCF Les Escoumins, site: La Vernière QC 47 21 26 -61 55 36
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ===========

** OKLAHOMA. 1600, Feb 8 at 2110 UT, KUSH Cushing with several classic country and classic rock tunes; 2116 UT ad string including promo for News9 (KWTV)`s latest weather gadget coming soon; 2118 UT ``Oklahoma`s Americana Station, KUSH 1600 and KUSH.com, The Kush``. No longer with talkshows in afternoon, such as the sparsely-affiliated Marilu Henner show.

Upgrade from 1 to 5 kW ND daytime was completed some time ago, resulting in slightly better groundwave signal here; with 70 watts at night, we`d never know it exists vs the skywave from Denver, St Louis, Dallas, etc. In fact, during above log occasional fades produced SAH of 5 or 6 Hz, probably from Vietnamese Metroplexer KRVA, which is its major nemesis once skywave starts to kick in (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ===========

** U S A. 770, Feb 3 at 0248 UT, plugs for ``promo code W-A-B-C`` to some 800 number, vs CCI, presumably including KKOB/KKOB. Unusual for WABC NJ to make it ~1315 miles out to here. In case you think it`s in New York, check this coverage map
    http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat...atus=L&hours=N
which shows it not even reaching Scranton at night from just east of Clifton NJ; never mind skywave (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 770, Feb 8 at 1334 UT, extended weather forecast, ``Newstalk 770 and 92.5, WVNN, where Alabama talks, depend on it``, 1335 UT on to `live & local Dale? Dave? Jackson Show. I was expecting to hear bleed from KKOB/KKOB already, 8 minutes after sunrise here, but WVNN is in full daytime, not faded out yet, 7000/250 watts U2, Athens AL. 92.5 is not a mere translator, but 3.1 kW WVNN-FM licensed to Trinity AL, which is way down the other side of Decatur.

Too bad Athenians can`t listen to WABC at night. NRC Pattern Book indicates WVNN is the closest non-daytimer 770 to WABC, i.e. 817 statute miles by air, per distancefromto.com --- that`s enough for no ``clear channel` protexion (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 880-CUSB, Feb 8 at 0455 UT, KHAC Tse Bonito NM is dominant with no LSB, as always running 10 kW day power at night, and at :55 past most hours for about 2 minutes, interrupting programming for `American Family News` which is anything but, pushing far-right agenda, pro-Gorsuch & pro-DeVos (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1060+, Feb 8 at 1338 UT, KIJN Farwell TX, Spanish ad with heavy gringo accent for a pro-beef cattle-feeder in nearby Hereford TX, back to praise music; off-frequency on hi side making usual fast SAH with anything else (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1590, Feb 8 at 1352 UT, KVGB Great Bend KS with `News from the Oil Patch` by guy with non-radio voice; ads for petroleum businesses such as fishing lost equipment out of wells (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 700, Feb 8 at 1328, Indian drumming and fluting vs WLW. Presumed the indigenous station often audible around sunrise here, XEETCH, Etchojoa, Sonora, 5 kW daytimer, La Voz de los Tres Rios (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search February 8, UT, all looping WSW from down-under, except 1566-NW, surely Korea:

    At 1317, 774, 702
    At 1318, 684, 657
    At 1320, 702, 792, 828
    At 1322, 837, 882
    At 1325, 1566-NW

Local sunrise here: 1326 UT, now earlying 1 minute per day. I`m not always awake in time to check for these, but my neighbor Richard Allen near Perry always seems to be, and reported today to IRCA:

``Pre-sunrise carrier signals heard on 612 and 702 kHz from DU direction, both strong at times. What's going on? There appears to be no correlation between solar activity and propagation!`` WWV had reported at 1200: solar flux 72, K-index 1, no storms (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans Pacific JBA MW carrier search February 15, UT:
Unlike neighbor Richard Allen, I had all these on the DX-398 when I awoke just after sunrise at 1319 UT:
    At 1320, 612, 594, 558 from WSW
    At 1323, 774 from NW
At 1326, 1134 from NW, 1422 from NW
    At 1328, 1548 from WSW
At 1320, 1557 from NW, stronger 1566 from NW
(Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1521.0, Feb 15 at 0230, carrier making quite audible tell-tale het against 1520.0 KOLM/KOKC, no doubt BSKSA signifying trans-Atlantic propagation is open. But nothing detected on several other lower split frequencies checked. So I try longwave again:

At 0231-0232 UT Feb 15, I finally get some JBA trans-Atlantic LW carriers on 162, 198, 207, 216 kHz on the NRD-545 and ALA-330S, with no sign they are NDBs, altho some higher LWBC channels are beacon-blocked. 216 is strong enough to DF on the DX-398 as from NE. I was a bit surprised at 162 as France is presumably running much reduced power now just for phase-modulated timesignals. 198 would be BBCR4, 207 Iceland (but no 189), 216 Monaco/France. Or Morocco is also listed on 207, but nothing heard on 171 kHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 1610, Feb 11 at 0555 UT, South Asian music, so is it CHHA Toronto, Voces Latinas? Not all their programming is Latin, notably 03-04 UT Punjabi Tue-Sat, and 04-05 UT Mon. But until 0600 UT (1 am local) sked here
    http://chha1610am.ca/wp-content/uplo...610AM-2016.jpg
`El Nocturno de Radio Voces Latinas` which implies Spanish.

There is another ethnic Canadian on 1610, CHRN, Montreal, supposed to be all-Asian, with only 1 kW vs 6.25 from CHHA, and closer CHHA normally blox it here; but this website is also blocked as insecure:
    https://radiohumsafar.com/
but I get thru to this one:
    http://www.radiohumsafar.com/
where its disorganized and incomplete program schedule
    http://www.radiohumsafar.com/schedule/
    gets no closer than this:
10:00 pm to 04:00 am Punjabi News Monday to Friday

Their about-us page does not explain what Humsafar means, just:

``Radio Humsafar is a twenty four hour a day, seven days a week source for South Asian programming. On air in several places in Canada as well as all over the world via Internet. Radio Humsafar broadcasts in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and English. Radio Humsafar reaches over 1.5 million listeners throughout the world.

Radio Humsafar enjoys a top notch team of broadcast professionals with wide international experience. From Punjabi and Hindi musicals to Classical and Ghazal programs, from talk shows on current and controversial issues to live news direct from India and Pakistan. Radio Humsafar connects Canadians and Americans of South Asian descent to their roots, tradition and culture.

Radio Humsafar – dynamic, energetic, stimulating, informational, and entertaining.``

So are those its literal meanings? Google translate cannot deal with Humsafar, at least when spelt Romanly (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    =============

** U S A. 1020, Feb 15 at 1337 UT, Spanish alabanzas QRMing semi-local KOKP Perry OK, with a 68/minute SAH = 1.13+ Hz, so KCKN Roswell NM must be back on air. Loops for there rather than the other 50 kW SS, KMMQ Omaha market, which anyhow is areligious. It`s tough to keep up with KCKN`s comings & goings, as the latest NRC DX News dated Feb 20 but published Feb 12, reported in AM Switch, ``Stations informing the FCC that they are silent: KCKN NM Roswell – Silent Jan. 26; transmitter was operating erratically`` --- at least they are keeping FCC informed, with an understandable delay in getting the info out. The thing is, KCKN has no business QRMing KOKP, since it`s pre-sunrise there and should be on night pattern with null toward us, and mainly KDKA. But that`s SOP for KCKN. Are they telling FCC about that? (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1280, Feb 15 at 1343 UT, just as I tune in, non-ID for ``103-3 The Mix``, i.e. KSOK Arkansas City KS, before it`s solid on daytime groundwave; and the FM is of course nothing but a translator but better than 100 watts night power on AM? Or rather, ``The Mixx`` per NRC AM Log. I couldn`t hear the second X; classic rock ensues (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. UNIDENTIFIED. 1590, Feb 14 at 0147 UT, earnest YL preaching Christian stuff in Spanish, dominating frequency for a while and slightly stronger on N/S than on E/W antenna. Her ministerio is named Cristo Te Llama Hoy, and says it`s on FB by that name. 0154 UT gives contact info including a P O Box somewhere in Tejas, and her apellido is Herrera. 0155 UT to music and fadeout; 0159 UT fade-in a bit, but no ID; 0200 UT fade in better with norteña song, maybe hymn, cut off at 0202 UT to intro next program, maybe mentioning Alma Viva, phone number, and fade into QRM as I have to QRT, without getting a DF on the DX-398. Also a persistent het on low side, maybe KWBG IA as in DXLD 16-15.

First thought is KMIC Houston, but as we discovered a few months ago, it flipped from R Aleluya to Asian. The only other Texan Spanish religionist in NRC AM Log is: KDAE Sinton 1000/500 U4, address Corpus Christi and // Radio Libertad.

Now for the research. The main FB page by that name says it`s in El Salvador, with nothing much on it, but URL automatically inserts a dot: /cristotellama.hoy

Searching on KDAE leads to this:
    http://www.radiolibertad.net/spanish/radioschedule.htm
of which 1590 is the only AM station, plus a bunch of Texas FMs, but program sked does not match what I heard, tho it has a female pastora. This may well require further monitoring.

Adding Herrera to search on "Cristo te llama hoy" leads to someone named Hna. Madai Herrera:

    https://es-la.facebook.com/herrera.madai/
which guess what, is on R. Aleluya, so that takes us back to KMIC Houston, including this item from a week ago at the SAME time:

    ``Cristo Te Llama Hoy/Hna.Madai Herrera 7 de febrero a las 5:15 ·
    #BuenosDias ??

So is KMIC still Radio Dabang, or not, or partly that and partly Aleluya?? The latter still claims to be on 980 and 88.1 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1590, Feb 15 at 0140 UT, another try to mail down the Spanish religion here which last night appeared to be coming from KMIC Houston, back in Spanish after a South Asian format. Don`t get much, but some gospel music and talk; at 0158 UT mentions La Virgen María, Catholic rather than Pentecostal or Hindu keywords. Then arrives this clarification from our DXLD correspondent in Houston, tnx Stephen:

``Glenn, it appears KMIC 1590 is back to Radio Aleluya, Spanish language religion. Radio Dabang had been on 1590 for several months with South Asian programming, after moving off KLVL 1480.

KLVL launched a new FM translator on 95.3, which went on the air with South Asian programming a couple of weeks ago. I discovered that it was Radio Dabang, // to both KLVL 1480 and KMIC 1590. Now it seems that Radio Dabang has dropped 1590 in favor of the FM signal and its poorer AM counterpart.

At a 0300 check February 15, KMIC 1590 was // to sisters KJOZ 880 and the local 88.1 FM, but NOT // to siblings KQUE 980 or KRCM 1380 (apparently running more than authorized 50 watts at night, but much less than the 22 kW day power; perhaps using directional array instead of ND?)

I will do some more checking to see if 1590 is fulltime Radio Aleluya or splitting time with something else.

The KLVL 1480 day signal is decent, but the night signal starts dying west of downtown Houston, and is buried in the co-channel pileup outside of West Loop 610. The 95.3 translator gets out farther with an east-west directional signal that protects LPFM KEPH on the south side of the metro area and an unbuilt LPFM in NE Harris County. Co-channel KTTF in Tomball (NW Harris County) has had some of its southeastern coverage area clipped by the translator.
    Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

Dear Glenn, "humsafar" means "soulmate", and there are plenty of Bollywood titles on the subject. One of my all time bollywood music favourites is "aye mere humsafar" from "all is well", e.g.

** U S A. 820, March 2 at 1304 UT, another talk station with WBAP nulled as much as possible. Think I hear a traffic report mentioning Gary, 1306 UT into a show from Washington DC. Must be the Bill Press show as scheduled on WCPT, 820 for Chicago which is now Willow Springs IL, 5800/1500 U2 per NRC AM Log, ``Chicago`s Progressive Talk``, yet affiliated with Fox, among other networx! Other Chi stations are still in, including 780, 1000 and 1200 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

I'm guessing this was a product of WCPT's daily carriage of the late Alan Colmes, who is and will be sorely missed by forward-thinkers. Alan's show was itself a product of the Fox News-Talk Network (to their credit); personally I can't think of any talk-host with whom I agreed more closely, or often, than Mr. Colmes (GREG HARDISON, CA, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1200, March 2 at 1314 UT, romantic music in Spanish over WOAI. No doubt it`s WRTO Chicago, maybe still Univisión América but not their new sports network as allegedly in the offing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of USA [if any], unidentified [if any], separated by ======= Within each, they are in frequency order

** CANADA. 2748.99-CUSB, March 5 at 0202 UT, marine weather by French YL, including Madelaine, avis aux navigateurs. CCG website shows VCS Halifax via Chebogue NS site starting at 0140 in English, then French. S8, better signal than usual (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1000, March 9 at 1320 UT, KTOK OKC, mentions ``the late Mike McCarville``, who had a morning talkshow here. Yes, he just died yesterday. Another conservative I never listened to. Here`s a story:
    http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/163475/

``McCarville [portrait] --- Condolences to family and friends of longtime OKLAHOMA radio talk show host and political commentator MIKE MCCARVILLE, who died TODAY (3/8) at 76, according to a post at his website.
    http://mccarvillereport.com/archives/43933

MCCARVILLE, most recently proprietor of "THE MCCARVILLE REPORT" political blog, was a host and PD at KTOK-A/OKLAHOMA CITY and a commentator for KOSU/STILLWATER and KGWA/ENID; he also filled in on NRANEWS.COM's talk shows online and on SIRIUSXM RADIO. He was a former reporter for THE OKLAHOMAN and THE TULSA TRIBUNE, among many other papers and publications. and an Assistant News Director for CBS affiliate KWTV/OKLAHOMA CITY.

In the post on THE MCCARVILLE REPORT, Contributing Editor JASON DOYLE ODEN wrote, "It is my unfortunate duty to inform you that our friend MIKE MCCARVILLE is no longer with us on Earth. After struggling with an illness, he has gone to his deserved rest. That familiar laugh and smile are now part of Heaven’s domain. It is the image of that twinkle in MIKE’s eyes and his quick offer of a cup of coffee that haunt me as I write this piece to stay [sic] goodbye to the man who was my boss, my mentor and best of all, my friend."``

Then weather by Emily Sutton, of KFOR-TV. Lots of TV weatherpersons have side deals with various radio stations, extra cash, or it is just part of the TV jobs for promotion? (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

    ===========

** U S A. 910, March 9 at 1316 UT, loops WSW/ENE, listener comments on phone separated by beeps, turns out to be a promo for calling 623-9100, for ``Noalmark Broadcasting Group and 93.7 The Beep``. Opinion format culled from voice mails? Suspect it`s KKBE NM, soon confirmed by PSA for City of Roswell, other ads. (No sign of KVIS OK yet.)

WTFDA FM Database shows as to be expected, 93.7 is a mere 250 watt translator wagging this 5 kW dog: ``K229BV // KKBE 910 93.7 ROSWELL NM 0.0 0.25 0.0 5.3 33-23-55 104-31-18 `NEWS TALK 910` NEWS/TALK`` No such slogan listed, but ha2, it`s not really ``The Beep`` despite the beeps, but ``The Beat`` according to Wikipedia with ``rhythmic contemporary`` format, whatever that mean. 910 was originally KBIM, which led to KBIM-TV channel 10, and its original full-power KBIM-FM was 97.1 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1020, March 9 at 1322 UT, with KOKP morning non-sports talkshow nulled, Spanish making slow SAH, and ``ESPN Deportes`` ID in passing, then Omaha traffic report and weather. It`s KMMQ Plattsmouth NE on 50 kW day power, last known as ``La Estación de la Raza`` in NRC AM Log 2016-2017. No sign of the other SS on 1020 now, 50 kW KCKN Roswell NM, despite just hearing 910 KKBE, so presumably that broke down again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1350, March 5 at 0222 UT and 0229 UT, partial IDs amid music as ``La Nueva 13-50 AM y la 97.9 FM, los éxitos``. That`s now a match in the WTFDA FM Database for KZTD in Cabot AR, for ``K250BT, 97.9, Jacksonville AR, 250 watt translator // KZTD-1350, FIESTA MEXICANA 1350, REGIONAL MEXICAN``. I logged this last September with very confusing FM connexions to 105.5 Baton Rouge LA, and 98.7 Wichita Falls TX. See
    http://www.bclnews.it/2016/09/28/gle...er-27-28-2016/
BTW, power is allegedly 2500 watts day, 73 watts night and this is the latter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1630, March 5 at 0216 UT, ``La Mexicana, --- FM y 16-30 AM`` --- must be the name KRND Fox Farm WY is going by now. Numerous search hits show it`s really ``La Jota Mexicana, 94.7 FM y 16-30 AM``. 94.7 is of course, nothing but a translator (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Mostly Mexican MWDX to Enid OK, February 24-March 9, 2017

These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also VHF/UHF, sometimes utility, ham, which may be found in several archives without much delay, such as

[over 200,000 views! as of March 9, 2017]

All times and dates strictly UT. Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan stock caradio as specified; ICR-75 E-W longwire

** MEXICO. 730, March 9 at 1309, Spanish federal PSA for the Cámara de Diputados, and another one, then full ID for XEHB AM 730, 50,000 watts y XHHB FM 102.1(?), 25,000 ERP ``en efectivo``, with street address in Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, ``sólo éxitos en Fiesta Estéreo``. WRTH 2017 still has the old ``Ke Buena`` slogan and no FM //. Or is it 107.1 as in IRCA Mexican Log 2015?

Yes, WTFDA FM Database, which now includes Mexico, shows 107.1 is really XHEHB-FM in nearby San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua, Estereo Fiesta, but fails to show // 730 XEHB. The real XHHB FM is 94.7 in Hermosillo; the E`s are inserted to avoid duplication as AM stations are forced to start migrating to FM, but are easily missed in hearing or even speaking.

I started bandscan upward from 540 a few minutes earlier, already after our sunrise at 1251, and this is the first Mexican still audible, despite horrible splash from 740 KRMG on 50 kW day power (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 870, March 9 at 1313, XETAR hasn`t quite faded out yet, in indigenous language with some Spanish number-words, LV de la Sierra Tarahumara, Guachochi, Chihuahua, as long as WWL is nulled, still strong. Far from the border, this daytimer will keep signing on at 1300 UT until DST overtakes April 2 for *1200, when our sunrise will then be circa 1210 UT, maybe reaudiblizing XETAR for a bit (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SAUDI ARABIA. 1521.0, March 5 at 0218, quite a het upon Kim Komando, 1520.0 KOKC. Loops NE/SW, not SE/NW, so surely it`s the 2-megawatt BSKSA, Duba, Saudi Arabia, rather than a ZNS spur. No other TA carriers noted in cursory check of a few frequencies on MW & LW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

They might even be missing the added E in the XHEHB ID, which is common for that variety of AM-FM migrant. (See: XHEOA, XHEPQ, XHECPQ which are known to ID as XHOA, XHPQ and XHCPQ. Fun fact: two of those "wrong" calls are actually available!)
