    Post DOUBLE-HOP! CKUA-93.7 into Kingsport, TN. 1849 miles June 11, 2012 @ 2:01pm EDT

I was tuned to 93.7 hearing Z-94 from Minot coming in strong at first, then faded out, but, I did'nt tune around, I left it there and after a few minutes of static I heard a very unusual sounding station rising above the noise. The first mention of Calgary is what made me really perk up as you will hear.

Summary of audio........00:04 can hear light splatter from adjacent 93.5 WAXM " Five Star Country 93-5 WAXM..."
00:32 start to hear CKAU fading up
00:41 news.. "....Edmonton's Government House today..."
00:50 mention of the 2012 Global Petroleums Show in Calgary
00:54 nice ID "...in the CKUA Newsroom.."
01:01 another nice ID "...CKUA Radio Network, across alberta and on the internet..."

Also I've attatched a map showing the distance between Calgary and Kingsport and also a pic of what the G7IZU map looked like at the time.

Awesome catch. It's not easy to get a Canadian ID either. It's a great feeling.

I sit looking west on three open channels low in the band recording 24/7 specifically looking for that kind of stuff. It does happen.

It's like the 'if a tree falls in the woods' theory. You have to be there, and you were there when the paths lined up.

    Congrats

Sorry if this dumb but how far of a distance before it's considered double hop? I logged KUWV FM 90.7 on 6-10 I believe it is around 1340 miles from me.

Up to 1500 single hop. 1500-1600 maybe double hop. 1600 very slight chance of single hop. 1700 or more double hop.
You find a gray area in the 1500-1600 mile range. 1450mile reception is considered long single hop.

Fantastic catch, Tim. Really lucky ID. A fellow using the Global Tuners remote from Montreal, Quebec says he had ESPN on 94.5 during this opening and thinks it was Nevada. No ID for him though.

The maximum range for single hop Es is about 1400-1500 miles. the more intense openings often produce such distances. It's believed that further distances require two or more separate ionized E layer patches or "clouds". 7 yrs of FM DX recording with 3070+ logged I've only one single double hop reception.
