I got "CTV Northern Ontario" on analog channel 2 here in Columbia SC for about 20 minutes tonight (Friday 05 July 1900 EDT). Just doing a quick and dirty search on Wikipedia, this looks to have been CHBX-2 Sault Ste Marie ON, though it doesn't seem that most Canadian TV stations ID anymore.

This was a case of "skip by accident"! I mistakenly changed my analog TV to channel 2 (the DTV set top box is set to channel 4) and had almost forgotten what analog skip looks like! I was not set up to record on this TV set (and my other set doesn't presently have an antenna attached) and had to record using... my BlackBerry... I hope to post this to YouTube sometime this weekend.

Incidentally, for all my WTFDA friends out there, a big hello, I've kept up my membership but have been out of touch for some time. Matt Sittel, are you still a member? My own Matthew is now 6 years old and has just finished kindergarten. We are doing fine.

    Welcome back, David.

CHBX-2 is indeed the only CTV Northern Ontario station left on 2. The key station is CICI-5 Sudbury. CKC0-2 relays CTV Kitchener.

Few Canadians show call letters or carry local news. Most stations are in regional networks.

    Thanks Danny and KY.
The signal was around very weakly for a few minutes below video level, came up to weak video and then dropped away rapidly just after 1200 utc.I understand it is due to close in the next few months which is bad news!

Have you received any digital ATSC TV DX in Portugal? What equipment do you have to DX Digital ATSC signals?

    Thanks

Hi...Unfortunately reception of TA digital ATSC signals is well nigh impossible, odds about the same as winning the lottery jackpot I reckon...Most of the time TA signals are very weak anyway....Those videos above are received with sync reinserted locally, and use very narrow video IF bandwidth, then afterwards the video then is de-noised a bit...Sound is received separately via a radio,so the end result "looks" much stronger than it actuallly was

If you'd have tried to receive it with a "normal" NTSC set there wouldn't have been much or even anything to see at all,and you can't do that sort of weak signal trickery with ATSC-doesn't work.

If TA signals do get strong, like the Florida signal from July 2008,it's usually with bad bad bad multipath distortion which ATSC doesn't like.

I've detected weak TA ATSC carriers over the past few years(54.310 etc),but that's been "it"...Looking on a spectrum analyser no nice even lump of 6MHz digi signal above it when the carrier is appearing so a decoder wouldn't respond.

    Regards,

    Hugh
