Default What's Your Opinion of the 2013 E-Skip Season?

Bad. Or more accurately, horribly bad. The only thing keeping me from saying horrible is the fact that we did have a few skip openings in early July, and one on July 26th. Europe, however, has had one of their best summers ever...and that also goes for AUGUST! Here it was mostly listening to the crickets chirp.

May was above average here in terms of number and quality of openings, but once the June 2 opening was over, June was the worst June I've seen in 20 years. July was fair,
and I don't usually expect much from August. I weigh the number of openings, the number of skip stations hear, length of openings and also the geographic distribution. I had one Canadian logged, no Maritimes openings, and nothing to the Caribbean, Bermuda or the Bahamas. I can't remember when that happened last. I had more new logs this season mostly due to setting up on some frequencies I'd previously not spent much time with. So, bottom line, I voted "Fair" but I'd have to say it was on the low side of fair.
If this were a letter grade, I think I'd probably go for a C-.

Although it was far and away the worst Es season here since starting my current TV log in May 1994, I did manage six new logs. When you have a thousand TV logs, new ones are not easy. Therefore, I rate the season as fair.

I gave it a, "fair" grade. I'd call it a C- if it was a school grade. It had it's moments and I did manage to log a few new DTVs (Es DTV total is now 30) but I've certainly seen better years. June was a write off. May and July performed OK. It's not uncommon for Es to be just, so-so, during the years of the solar cycle peak so I'm not surprised by it's mediocre performance.

I rate the season bad for e skip. Also tropo has been the worst I've seen so far although the season has time to redeem itself here if September is good.

I showed some promise with good openings on 5/4 and 5/10 (which in most years was before the first weak opening of the season would be seen), but then....($&*#*@%%!). Never thought I would go through the whole Es season with only two new Es stations (CJCN and WDVZ-CA) added to the log.

I'm surprised I haven't seen any "excellent" or "good" poll votes from the DXers on the West Coast.

Poor season for me. Way better than 2012, with 18 (IIRC?) new logs, including 630-mi Sacramento which beats the record for shortest-distance skip for me. Also got more SD stations which makes me very happy. But for days and days it was WAITING. First, Murphy's law killed me in May as I missed 4 hours of skip on 5/10, and two other openings that month to the Midwest. June was worse than normal, and July was fuggitaboutit. One new log on 7/21. I do better AM DXing than FM I think....

I hope that 2014 will have E-skip twice a week, every week. And strong as well, not just 88.1 MUF for five minutes and gone. Strong 108+ openings are rare here and they are NEEDED.

I don't rate seasons the way some (many) others do

As far as new station catches, my C-90 tape reviews are only done thru June 2011, so it's obvious that I really don't consider that a prime element in my 40+ years of gathering FM Es data here.

Pat, as you know, I was just trying to put a positive slant on it.

August turned out to be my worst for Es, with the only event being noted on August 4. XEPM-2 was IDed at 2015.

Honestly, it doesn't bother me at all that the Es season was lackluster. I worked hard for my six *new* TV logs, and I did all that could be done. I used my equipment and time to the best of my abilities.

The season is over, and I'm thankful for my six new logs.

Would end up giving the Es season a C here. It was bound for a D grade, but the 7/26 opening, albeit not a particularly lengthy one, was really enjoyable with quality Es to a rarer here (IL/IN/WI). Openings on 5/29 to NE/KS/IA, 7/3 to FL/SC/GA, and 7/5 to IL/MO/KS/OK were respectable also. But can't grade it any higher thanks to a pitiful June that hopefully is not repeatable.

I echo the sentiments earlier in the thread, other than one really fluky good overnight (6/21), the tropo season is well on its way to an "F" grade here. Worst I've seen since doing this. Hope September and October bring something.
