Residents of Chalco in the State of Mexico, southeast of Mexico City, will soon be in Contacto with the country's newest social community station.

Comunicaciones en Contacto, Cultura y Bienestar Social, A.C. will operate the station, which becomes the sixth to set up shop in the eastern portion of the State of Mexico (Otumba, Neza with 2, Texcoco, and Amecameca all have stations).

It looks like this is an ex-pirate, but not one of recent vintage. A "Contacto 100.5" was closed in Chalco in November 2005 after being raided by the now-defunct Federal Investigation Agency, along with another pirate in the area.

The connection between the two, beside the name, starts with Luis Fernando Martínez. A Luis Fernando Martínez Aguilar filed a comment on behalf of CCCBS in 2015 in favor of 400 kHz spacing, which was probably necessary to allow Contacto to operate legally with so many stations around it.

The IFT's September 6 meeting, its last with Contreras as president, also tackled multiprogramming matters (and a bunch of irrelevant stuff). Of note:

-Excélsior TV will hit 38 Imagen TV transmitters after the false start of some months ago. No timeshift channels are in the wings this time.
-XHL will get Gala TV, perhaps allowing Multimedios León to stop carrying it.
-Gala TV will replace Surestv in Coatzacoalcos.

It's arrivederci for an AM radio station that has turned in its concession and gone off the air.

XEPVI-AM 1280 Xalisco-Tepic, Nayarit, was owned by Plenitud de Vida, A.C. and offered religious programming. Plenitud de Vida surrendered its concession in July, citing that its budget did not allow it to continue to run the radio station.

Additionally, as predicted, the Veracruz state network has said goodbye to four of its television stations. XHCDB, XHGVS, XHVIM and XHVTA did not make the digital television transition.

I need to catch up on some moldy oldies in the article department.

The first is from last week in Reforma. Indigenous (and community) stations, which are entitled to 1% of every federal agency's advertising budget, want the government to get a move on. The other worry that AMARC has is that with declining budgets and more qualifying stations, the pie slices will get ever-smaller. On the bright side, the IFT has been joined by a few other agencies.

The other is this curious item from Tribuna Campeche two weeks ago. It talks a bit about the AM-FM migration for XHIC-FM, a (permit transition limbo'd) social station in Campeche. Apparently the move to FM was a very good deal — the station wanted increased coverage, and it had also been informed by the National Anthropological and Historical Institute (INAH) that its AM stick was located in the historic city center of Campeche, which had recently earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and was a blight on the city!

The IFT will be closed tomorrow and Wednesday after today's Mexico City earthquake. Much as with the closure of other services (such as all public schools in Mexico City and seven states), this allows time for the IFT's facilities to be inspected for potential damage.

Among the events that will be held at another date was a planned Pleno meeting that had been slated for tomorrow. There has been no word on the planned hearings in the Senate to select a new IFT president.

No radio facilities appear to have taken significant damage. XHZA for a time lost power to its transmitter on Avenida Juárez in Toluca — resulting in the discovery of this site for the first time. Some TV stations are off air — Imagen's Cuernavaca transmitter was reported down.

As with the earthquake off the Chiapas coast 12 days ago, broadcasters are engaging in a variety of support activities, broadcasting news and official information and opening up donation centers. President Peña Nieto delivered a message to the nation via cadena nacional at 8pm.

Well, here's some radio damage. XHTIX-FM Temixco-Cuernavaca Mor. suffered some damage to its facilities on a Cuernavaca hilltop. And the STIRTT offices also showed visible cracks and some broken glass.

It looks like Morelos is the epicenter of radio damage from Tuesday's earthquake — and here's the big one, which is even being described by Radio Fórmula as the most spectacular scene of destruction in Cuernavaca.

Grupo Audiorama Morelos (XHNG-FM 98.1 and XHCM-FM 88.5; XHCU-FM 104.5 is co-owned but maintains separate studios and transmitter in Cuautla) had their offices and primary transmitter in the Torre Latinoamericana in Cuernavaca (not to be confused with Mexico City's building of the same name).

    Well, here's the tower.

That photo comes to us from the Diario de Morelos and shows the level of devastation to this building (fortunately, all Audiorama employees are safe). The tower is a mangled mess. The stations are off the air.

Here's another look, from Informe24 Morelos, the news department of Audiorama Morelos:

The ten-story structure may be destined for demolition.

It is worth noting that XHNG-FM has an authorization on hand for a backup facility, which is at the Radiorama Morelos (División Pergom) offices. This may be the reason why it is not in use, not to mention that since the studios were wiped out, there is nothing to transmit.

No such authorization is on file for XHCM.

Today, XHTIX returned to the air, meaning Cuernavaca is now down just two stations instead of three.

The IFT remained closed today to allow another day for inspectors to comb through its facilities. It will reopen on Monday.

Radiológico is back on the air in part because MVS Radio Cuernavaca has taken the station in. Apparently the studio damage is significant enough to require them to vacate the studios, even if the transmitter is being repaired (or potentially an auxiliary pressed into service on another frequency?).

As for XHCM-XHNG, there has been no social media activity since the 19th.
