    Red face Ludington, Michigan Bandscan

    Ludington Bandscan - August 2014
    Chris Kadlec / beaglebass.com/dx

Ludington, an hour north of home and just 22 miles north of my Silver Lake Sand Dunes site (yet a whole world away on the FM dial), is today's bandscan. Ludington is where the band opens up to the north and northwest as compared to points south that hear those areas far less often. Wausau, Rhinelander, and Marquette are common regulars here, all in the neighbourhood of 160-200 miles. Chicago and Milwaukee are regulars as well with a handful of Milwaukee stations being 24/7 locals in addition to Iron Mountain at 150 miles. Much of Green Bay and the Door Peninsula are locals here as well with powerhouse signals WIXX and WAPL among the strongest on the dial. The bandscan was taken in two segments: one facing southwest and another facing northwest, the latter of which had far better results due to some tropo conditions. Inland stations, aside from a few where frequencies to the west are low-powered or too distant, are virtually non-existent in town. Stations highlighted in orange took advantage of that northwest tropo, but all others are more or less expected stations at this location and can be found in multiple other bandscans (though the linked bandscan was taken somewhat inland thus conditions are slightly different). A list of the strongest locals and a general list of locals can be found below the bandscan in addition to a location map.

What were you using? A car radio?

How did you get two "perfect" stations on the same frequency (I don't know how Z104 could even be heard there!)

I uploaded the un identified clips to my sound cloud btw

    Hi there.

Yes, I was just using my car radio for this scan. For me, it's merely a basic bandscan. If I wanted to have more details, I'd pull out the MP3 player, which is a far more sensitive tuner and could probably bust through the local interference on the adjacent frequencies of the local stations (mostly just translators that exist for the fact that local stations are always being knocked out by Wisconsin and Illinois). However, I didn't have time for that. I had even intended to go to my other site afterwards, but didn't "finish" til after 10pm (as if a DXer ever really "finishes" DXing... more like force myself to leave).

My car radio has a directional back window antenna as opposed to a whip antenna. Because of that, I need to aim the car in a specific direction, which I did -- southwest, then northwest, using the diagonal parking spaces on either side of the road. Therefore, it's easily possible to have Madison in perfect aiming one direction, then Wausau in perfect aiming the other direction, for example. This was just a single go-through of the band, but with tropo, had I hung around, I could have gone through another time and had two stations perfect on the same frequency 10 minutes apart if conditions warranted. (But time didn't warrant and it wasn't that kind of unstable "moving" tropo...)

As for Z104 and the other Madison stations (98.1 and 102.5 especially), they're all quite common here just as Bay City, Grand Rapids, and Lansing are common on your side of the shore. 97 ZOK was solid as well, which isn't often heard in my neck of the woods as Whitehall is a nearby local at my place. Of all the stations heard in Ludington, 102 of them were also heard in my mid-lake bandscan.

    On Soundcloud:

92.9 - Sounds like KZ Radio - especially at the start - and U93 (or Z93 Cadillac), but impossible to know for sure because there are more than one station that would play such music. You'd have to see where conditions are strong.

94.7 is "KMCH Radio" Manchester, Iowa at about 190 miles. The ID is right in the clip at 0:27.

No idea on the 93.7... your tuner is just nasty when dealing with 2 different stations :-/

About the 92.9 clip, I edited out a part where I heard someone talking and moved my antenna and heard U93 south bend (ill upload it)

I've noticed the only time I can really DX is in the morning, idk why but it certainly seems that that's true

What car radio? What I use a lot is either my dad's truck radio Click image for larger version.

You can hear DX in the morning because of radiation inversion, which is related to the moisture that builds up near ground level with nighttime cooling. As the morning goes on and the air heats up from the sun, the inversion breaks, hence your DX opportunities growing slimmer. We usually call that "enhancement". I'm rarely awake for that stuff, but it's easy to hear plenty of stations in the early morning, but usually not much further than Madison and Green Bay here.

I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu factory radio with RDS.

Sadly, I don't have a bandscan from your area. When I was in Janesville on Saturday, I was only recording the RDS readouts for my log due to time constraints. I found it necessary to stop my DXing for the afternoon and evening to actually talk to my fellow DXers, 42 of which were in attendance. I'd have taken a bandscan in Madison that night, but in-town conditions were poor to say the least as compared to outside of town where Milwaukee and Rockford were strong and I needed enough sleep to prepare for the more important mid-lake bandscan I wanted to take the following afternoon, which I'll post likely later tonight (90.7 really gets out -- like a local in Madison with RDS, all the way up to Appleton, over to Manitowoc, and of course, the same over here with RDS).

I really suggest you join the Facebook groups if you haven't. You might find a lot more help and advice there -- FM DX Watchdogs is the most active one these days, where the WTFDA group is a bit quieter.

Did you see my other un identified station on 92.9?

Is there anything that would help my radio with the locals bleeding over to adjacent frequencies?

PS:just wondering if you possibly know if WBWI has RDS or not.
and what do you use to make logs? I would like to make logs/bandscans but my ADD doesn't help.

I did see the other 92.9 clip and it sounds like South Bend. It's always possible to be Cadillac, but probably not, given your location. I'm not sure if there is anything to really help your tuner out. There is equipment like phasers for all that stuff, but you need a lot more technical experience and know-how, something that I don't deal with because... well, I suck with that sorta stuff. Your tuner can be modified, but again, don't mess with what you aren't familiar with. It's all in the radio. You never know what you're getting until you've bought it. If it's sensitive, you're lucky, but then like mine, the frequencies are more narrow instead of wider, so you receive stations differently and may not hear something another person with another tuner is hearing. Pros and cons to every tuner...

WBWI certainly does have RDS. When I type out my logs from South Bend, Chicago, Rockford, Madison, and Green Bay (and fringe Milwaukee, mostly the strong ones I get here), you can see their readouts.

I use paper and pen for my actual logs. I'm pretty familiar with the stations the moment I hear them, so I don't need much else than paper, pen, radio, and ears. I write it all down, then I type it all out! I mean, I use Radio Locator for distances (type in the exact coordinates and use the overall list to speed things up), the WTFDA database or Doug's site for any other things like station ERP, Wikipedia station pages to collect any station names or slogans, etc. It takes hours upon hours for a nicely-made bandscan such as this.

Yeah, I'm not opening the radio, no way I guess it's just so sensitive. (I was going right by the WOLX transmitter in my dad's truck and went to 94.7 and there was no sign of WOLX on 94.9)

That's weird that WBWI has RDS because I get it on seek on my nano when it's plugged in to my homemade antenna but I get no RDS.

I basically just use radio locator, I just lookup any thing within 200mi of me and go off that. Then if I ID something I take a screenshot of the stations info (I ALWAYS use my iPad) Or I lookup a station I think it might be and see what there playing (if I'm really determined I'll listen to there stream)
But if I'm not by my house and have no wifi I make a note on my iPad, but I often forget to look them up afterwords. That reminds me

You're too far away to get WBWI's RDS. Just because you get the station doesn't mean the RDS decodes with it. Even the most powerful stations can have weak RDS. WAPL is strong as heck, but its RDS isn't so much. WBWI's RDS comes in well to the northeast of Madison, but not as well in Janesville I noted. There aren't many new catches for me nowadays and DX tends to be limited at home, so I don't often have much to look up. Along the lake though, it's always possible to hear a new catch from Iowa especially. The Dubuque area tends to be just common enough that now and then I get a station in the area that I haven't yet heard. I don't try for stations. I just go through the dial and see what's there. If I hear a station that I haven't heard, cool! I don't keep an official running log, hence doing bandscans instead. I'm more interested in local dials and how weather affects them.

Dubuque, all I usually get is 92.9 KATF and tht top 40 station on 105.3

about not trying for a particular station, I have started to try and do just that but It gets boring because 90-95% of the time it's not there. So I just go through and see what I'm working with, i might look to see if for example I get 103.5 KISS FM Chicago AND 101.3 KUUL Quad Cities I'll then pick through every channel.

About how weather affects it, that's where my "hobbies" meet because I know i want to work for the NWS and get a degree from OU in meteorology and something else too idk what as of now, anyway I kind of self taught myself in weather I'm mostly into the severe stuff but anything interests me. So about how it affects radio, I use WKKV and KATF as "benchmarks" and I shouldn't use WKKV but I haven't bothered to find another station yet, so i found that the time of day really affects the signal and so does the conditions between radio and transmitter.
I would like to hear what you found.
