  • June 16 Record Breaking E-skip from Moses Lake, WA *2x skip included!*

    Compliment to my friend Taylor's post from 6/17 - view here: https://forums.wtfda.org/forum/wtfda...-ellensburg-wa

    Like Taylor in Ellensburg, 60 miles to my southwest, I too had a record breaking E-skip opening on June 16 and had a very similar path to Taylor except I had two waves with a 30 minute break in between. Equipment used was the SPARC SHD-TX2 with an RTL-SDR dipole wrapped around (which believe it or not works!)

    (All times in Pacific - PDT)

    The first wave started at 5:38 pm with KHCT and KTBT (first ever Tulsa market station). This wave was mainly confined to Southeast/Central Kansas and Northern Oklahoma, particularly around Wichita, and ended just 20 minutes later at 6:00 pm with the TOTH ID of K238CK Hoisington.

    * 17:38 - 90.9 KHCT Great Bend, KS (1906 km / 1184 mi)
    * 17:38 - 92.1 KTBT Broken Arrow, OK (2280 km / 1417 mi)
    * 17:39 - 95.1 KICT Wichita, KS (2059 km / 1279 mi)
    * 17:40 - 98.7 KNSS Clearwater, KS (2082 km / 1294 mi) *HD*
    * 17:41 - 104.5 KMYZ Pryor, OK (2312 km / 1437 mi)
    * 17:47 - 94.7 KSKU Sterling, KS (1975 km / 1227 mi)
    * 17:58 - 91.9 KBDD Winfield, KS (2127 km / 1322 mi)
    * 17:59 - 94.3 KCVW Kingman, KS (2062 km / 1281 mi)
    * 18:00 - 95.5 K238CK Hoisington, KS (1935 km / 1202 mi)

    The second wave started at 6:34 pm with a double hop E-skip - WBVM 90.5 Tampa, FL! I uploaded a stand-alone short video of my capture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzBYz21gfFM
    * 18:34 - 90.5 WBVM Tampa, FL (3858 km / 2397 mi)

    Shortly after WBVM dissipated, I started getting Kansas once again, this time stronger and more widespread. Wichita came back, along with Dodge City, Hays and Topeka.

    * 18:36 - 92.5 KQMA Phillipsburg, KS (1817 km / 1129 mi)
    * 18:39 - 95.5 KVOB Lindsborg, KS (1991 km / 1237 mi)

    * 19:17 - 97.9 KWGB Colby, KS (1673 km / 1040 mi)

    This lasted roughly 45 minutes until 7:17 pm until a plot twist - a jarring path flip to California with the logs of KWAV Monterey and K238AH (KLVM) King City, CA with RDS. It took a quick Safari search on my phone to realize I was getting California. Through the next hour and 45 minutes, the E-skip paths took me from the Monterey area and down the California coast right through the San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego and into Tijuana areas, and branching off into the Fresno/Hanford/Bakersfield areas. From there, the clouds started moving east through the Inland Empire -- as L.A. and San Diego disappeared, Yuma and Las Vegas started to appear. By that point, the cloud had weakened to where I couldn't get many RDS catches (or anything from Vegas in HD). Las Vegas disappeared as Yuma shifted into Phoenix and eventually tapped into Tucson (KCMT 92.1) where the opening was over.

      Once-in-a-lifetime catch Kyle, congratulations. I see we both had the 'Crazy' flea-power on 105.9! Hard to believe how strong 65 watts sounded. And it looks like my religion 90.5 around 8:05 or so was likely Yucca Valley, thanks.
      91X was no doubt the strongest Es signal that night. It's one of the very few times where I've seen 4 to 5 bars on my car radio from an out-of-state signal. Equivalent of 8 to 10 bars on the 909X...which I did not touch the whole night just because I wasn't interested in dealing with staring eyeballs at CWU. I could have used it to null KDBL or even find a weak spot for one of the E'burg translators, but who cares! I had two dozen new stations and it was worth it with just the car radio in the parking lot!

      It was fun because I heard some great music on these stations. I had Groove 99.3 Bakersfield and Mega 97.9 Fresno, both w/ rhythmic oldies. Love old R&B from the '70s to '90s. In addition, KTWV was playing 'Jammin' by Bob Marley...a kick-a-- song for being heard 900 miles away.
      Did you note a 90.9 anytime during the CA part of the opening with an RDS reading 'PUBLIC'? I can't find anything that fits down there. KXJZ was too short I think for this opening as I only got into Fresno at the north end.
      FM/AM/SW DXer of Yakima, WA! God Bless America!

        I didn't notice any 90.9 with RDS radio text displaying "PUBLIC". KHCT's radio text displays the phone number (800-723-4657), though its PTY displays "Public". Based on what you said on DXWorld, I say it's very likely you had KHCT Great Bend.

          Congratulations on the super DXing, Kyle. The WVBM reception is exceptional especially on a portable receiver. If you'd like to compare notes here is my log from this day. I'd like to say it all began the day before. Tuning around just before midnight was surprised to find FM Es into British Columbia and Washington that briefly switched south into Mexico just after midnight. This kind of oddball conditions have often been a sign of better conditions to follow the next day. Es reappeared in the morning to Mexico, then the main even started up in the afternoon. At the end of the opening there was a brief resurge into the Walla Walla area which is about the time you had Pahrump / Las Vegas which is 160-180 miles SSE of here

            I am amazed at that waterfall picture from when you got KKSR 95.7. I can get that station any time of the day or night here in Ellensburg. But your path was so narrow, just to Pikes Peak OR (across the border from Walla Walla in the Blue Mtns), that Pasco stations never showed up in the waterfall! Even 100KW KIOK was nowhere to be found. Very strange Es path and very narrow. I've had that happen before - Hot 95.1 ABQ and 97.7 KLVO with nothing from the Sandia tower whatsoever.
            Also, great catch on KLOY 88.7, K-LOVE in Ocean Park/Astoria OR. I was able to receive that little station on top of Shellrock Peak last August, 6800 feet above elevation, 35 mi W of Yakima. It's a long hiking trip to get there, crossing by Burnt Mountain N of Rimrock and then bushwhacking onto a rocky scree slope to Shellrock. Cool rock shelter at the top and lots of interesting rock columns along the peak itself.

              Es can be highly geographically selective. One of the reasons I find it so fascinating. The 97.1 signal in the display was surely KXRX Walla Walla with Aerosmith but I couldn't get a PI decode out of the short lived signal. The 92.5 Is KZHR IDed by this Spanish ad for Bobs Burgers and Brew. A little earlier there was some Spanish on 96.3 which was likely Royal City, otherwise the Es mostly missed inland Washington. Having nearly the entire FM band open for DX is an experience any serious DXer should experience. In that display showing 90-100 MHz only the 91.7 with the HD sidebands is local - KTPH Tonopah. The 92.1 is a weak translator north of here and the 94.5 is KXLI in the Las Vegas area.

                Those signal peaks on 92.5 are about as strong as KZHR makes it into Ellensburg. If I drive down Mountain View Ave to Bi-Mart or Super 1, they are strong enough to cue RDS. At 130 miles, no less. On the east coast, 130 miles is tropo DX. Here, it's normal reception any time of the day or night.
                Hopefully, you and I can link even closer on FM next time. You've got 95.3 wide open, and 88.1 is probably wide open too. It would be so cool to see "Es 88.1 KCWU Ellensburg, WA" on the skip logger one of these days...my apartment is spitting distance from it. 0.54 miles away, 430 watts of (mostly) Top 40. And with RDS to boot.

                You want a Northwest 'dead spot' for FM? Or even daytime AM? Try Fields, Oregon, 110 miles S of Burns and 22 mi N of Denio, NV. You're lucky to hear anything stable on FM except for tropo scatter. Must be a meteor and Es paradise. Also, spots on the North Cascades highway in between Newhalem and Winthrop are nearly dead on FM, which would be great for FM propagation...

                  Not much further than my apartment is - 0.36 miles. I've been inside KCWU's studio on dozens of occasions and at its transmitter twice. Anyone who gets KCWU via E-skip should contact me as I can get them into contact with their engineer and GM.

                    To Crainbebo and DX_Sphere:

                    Congrats on the FM DX...

                    Don’t forget though, whenever the time is right, to check for DTV via Es. Even if you only have an FM antenna, it’s still possible, if hooked up to a TV, to catch, either DT 2 Las Vegas, or the 4 and 5 out of the El Lay area.

                    Patience is the key...but I was able to land WJLP 3 NJ yesterday on my FM antenna. My TV antenna needs work at this time.

                    Just a friendly reminder...

                      Heck of a catch! That is clearly double-hop, where sometimes I wonder if 1600 miles is 2Es or even in some cases wonder if 1400 is 2Es based on any observed midpoints. Those maps really help clarify and accentuate the picture.

                        I do occasionally go after DTV signals. A few pilots, nothing strong enough to decode.

                          My KWTX-97.5 log on 6/30/17 was definitely 2Es at 1623 miles. The other two stations swapping were KLMX Clayton NM and a country station (likely KNDN Shiprock NM). My log of 95.1 the Wolf Abilene on 5/21/21, at 1500 miles, just extremely long 1-hop. All the other stations were in the 1300-1450mi range except for one from Taos NM. 1600 is very likely a 2Es distance.

                              Thanks! I use QGIS to make my maps (and do other spatial analysis - I'm GIS certified)
