  • TA Es - Cape Cod, MA to Azores

Pleased to report that I've confirmed a Trans-Atlantic Es on FM from earlier today, July 1, 2021.

Around 9:30 am eastern, with 50 MHz TA paths on DXMaps and WTFDA members reporting paths from east coast to Canadian Martimes, I began beaming ENE and recording on SDRs from 87 to 99 MHz. While I was multitasking with my day job, I turned around and saw a signal on 87.7 around 10:15 local time, with a visually evident pattern of Es. This station was playing English language alternative type music.

A few intra-song breaks went by what sounded like Portguese language. With the help of some peers I got a stream match to "Antena 3" Pico da Barossa, Azores, and additionally uncovered 3 audio IDs. This is 2,376 miles from here... not sure if 2x or 3x.

Upon initial review of SDR recordings, I have uncovered 5 additional signals likely from Azores. 88.5, 89.6, 90.5, 97.0 and 98.9. Of these 5, 2 of them had potentially identifiable material. The others were extremely weak and/or only present with musical content and nothing verbal / potentially identifiable.

Audio clips are linked here. I will upload the confirmed 88.7 Antena 3 audio all to YouTube in a compilation in the next couple of days.

    88.7 Antena 3
    > RTP Antena 3, Pico da Barrosa (S?o Miguel, Azores). 30kw power at 2,378 miles (3,827 km) distance.
88.5 Unid - Portuguese chatter between English alternative style music
98.9 Unid - Portuguese chatter between Classical Music. Likely Antena 2 of Serra de Santa Barbara, Azores based on format and skip zone targets.
    > Edit - now confirmed - RTP Antena 2, Santa Barbara, Azores. 35kw power at 2,263 mi (3,642 km) distance.

Nothing special - I recently moved to this location and haven't put anything up at full height yet. I have a Korner 9.2 and Innovantenna OP-DES 11 element... both were used this morning on different SDRs. They are 15 feet and 20 feet above the ground and currently rotated by hand!

You are now responsible for DX history, Bryce. The first-ever FM Es from Europe caught by a person in the lower 48. My congratulations go out to you! I'm sure you'll be remembering this day for years if not decades to come.
