  • Excellent Double Hop sporadic E opening July 14

From 9:31-9:40AM Pacific Time during usual 1100-1400 mile mediocre Es to the east we had a spike that produced several stations 1500-2500 mile range from Michigan, Ohio, Ontario, and Massachusetts here in rural Nevada. The furthest being 95.1 WXTK in Massachusetts with an ad for Cardi's Furniture and Mattress and AgWay of Cape Cod. Verified by two Mass-ters of DX who live out there and know the stations. Bryce had SDR files for the same time to clearly match signals identical to mine. Mixing in perfectly is a fade-up for CKUE Chatham, ON "Canada's Cool FM" and some ads for Ontario. Another unknown station is mixing in. WXTK is a new personal all time distance record of 2482 miles. Also after reviewing Bryce's SDR recording of the Cape Cod dial 97.3 and 98.1 from his area both match up perfect enough to log. The Portuguese station WJFD announcer is reading temperatures and mentions Providence and Boston then into Portuguese music. 98.1 WCTK is 2 minutes of Blake Shelton "Anywhere" completely interference free but fades just before the actual ID heard in Bryce's recording. I personally do not count FM stations by song alone , don't even bother with them unless an ID or local content is heard but because of the effort put into this and the perfect circumstances and matchup to Bryce's' local recording we're calling it legit. There's still much left to review but again, if you have SDR files around that time period perhaps something extraordinary will be found or here's reinforcement that 2X Es was going on across the USA. I heard Bill in Detroit may have received a California station.

Amazing signals for nearly 2,500 miles. This needs to go in the All-Time Greatest DX board pronto. One you'll remember for YEARS to come, Randy!

That is some awesome stuff. I think we'll be talking about the events of E'skip from July 11-14th, 2021 for a long time to come.

Are there any Es events to compare them to, over the decades? Perhaps the super openings in June 1980? Or July 2004? Or the period around June 1987 when DXers noted at least TV Es literally every day, 7 days a week, for a month?

Take a gander at this DX Maps from July 14 2021 at 12:18 eastern. Note the multiple MUF spots nicely spread out 151 mhz, 133 mhz, 114 mhz, 115 mhz and 132 mhz . Looks like your DX was bounced from one MUF spot to another to another. I think this is a very rare event.

                Re post #7...

I only have iPhone using Chrome & Safari. How can I get these MUF maps to display like above? I select N America/50 MHz/MUF SpE tabs.... absolutely nothing shows on Safari; I get blocks with *no numbers* when I use Chrome.

Can someone troubleshoot this for me?

                cd

I snapshot this on a computer, using the snipping tool.

                  I also have the iPhone.
DX Maps does not render very well on Safari.
My solution was simply installing Firefox and viewing DX maps on that.

                  I hope that helps

I'm not too far from the general area of most of these stations received. 97.1 WREO is probably the closest at about 60 miles to my northeast, and at the time you heard these, I was receiving Es in both directions northeast and west. Halifax seemed to be in strong and also South Dakota. I didn't have any noted double hop, but then again, the band was just too crowded here anyways. I'm assuming you have few locals in Goldfield Nevada. It looks like middle-of-nowhere desert.

Few locals? He's literally in the middle of nowhere with one local and two translators, 90 channels mostly empty! A DXers paradise.

lol, yeah... I looked up Goldfield Nevada on Radio-locator and noticed that after I'd posted that. By the way, I suspect what we experienced that day was cloud-to-cloud hop and not so much what we would call double-hop, but it's hard to say with certainty. I just think it seems more plausible. I recall it was a question on the ham exam I took, and it referred to it as "chordal hop"... the signal loss is less when it bounces cloud-to-cloud.

Thanks guys, yes this is a DX paradise. The Es and Ms possibilities are spectacular. I've only been here since May 2020 and logged over 2200 stations. Double hop is not common but happens in many of the better openings. Having an almost entirely open band with almost no pestering from tropo, a hilltop location with a good horizon view, low noise, directional antenna, and an SDR greatly increases any chances of hearing long distances. I got on the SDR bandwagon at the end of last season. I was hesitant, worried about receiver overload and afraid it would take up all my free time. Ask me if I was correct about that! 2X Es was caught 4 times last summer, thrice with a single frequency tuner by pure luck being on the right frequency at the brief moment, and get an ID. Can only imagine what else was in if an SDR was recording. This year 2X Es was found on May 23 to Michigan and Indiana, June 15 Tennessee, early July a relog on 93.3 New Orleans 1644 miles, Kentucky, Mississippi in upper 1500s and maybe some others, and the main event July 14. I still need to review July 13 recordings when the east coast had exotic DX Caribbean, South America, etc.. it looks as though NC, VA, SC would have lined up.
