  • The $7 Scanner Strikes Again

    Wow....

Good tropo today to Orlando/Tampa, but.....what???

    WXL66 152.45 Mountain View AR (!!! - 960 miles)

This stuck out like a sore thumb. Nothing else nearby via Tropo---this eminded me of the WMAO DT25 last year.

There was tropo and even some ES this morning on the maps from Florida to Arkansas. I think the ES MUF was around 150mhz or so.

Kind of curious to know your antenna setup on this. Do you have it hooked up to a VHF TV antenna or something? I found a Midland weather radio laying around this winter that has a built in telescoping antenna and a spot for an external antenna. I may have to try this out when ES is up there this summer since it seems the south is the only ones getting anything right now.

That may be something of a record tropo distance for a NOAA 162-MHz station! There's so much clutter around here (seems one in every county) I only check them during intense Es events like Jun 15, 2008 http://www.qsl.net/wa5iyx/ra/kxi68_08.ra

Yes there are Es at this time, 3 hours later. This had to be tropo.....162.45 is really open here. I just wonder why there was nothing FM/TV/WB-wise near it!

        I use my CM3020!

That is pretty amazing! I hadn't realized how close the Mountain View call sign is to Springfield's; we are WXL46, they are WXL66. You are REALLY making me itch, Chris, to go to the antique malls/flea markets to find a scanner like yours.

It's a Realistic Pro-2011, Mike. I haven't really seen other scanners at yard sales....this is my wife's hobby!
