    unIDs from recent tropo extravaganza

A few unresolved unIDs from some very good late August and early September tropo. Heard in the Toronto area. Any leads are appreciated with thanks!

88.5 - Listening live, without headphones but recording. I thought it sounded like WV public radio. But on closer listen, at the very start it sounds like University of Pennsylvania. This was the opening where many of us from ON/NY/OH/MI had NC. I caught the tail end and had mostly WMIT alone with WV, western PA, western MD and OH. I had nothing from the east coast, so I feel confident ruling out Philadelphia. Any sense of anything being said? This is a challenging clip. Sept 4 2158 EDT from Scarborough Bluffs on the north shore of Lake Ontario in east Toronto.

96.9 - Sounds like: "Your summer never sounded hotter, (Magic?) 97". And a CHR/AC type format. From my Joker's Hill site in nice hilly country just nw of Toronto, with DX centred on IN IL KY TN MI and OH. Aug 20 at 0631 EDT.

97.5 - ID mid-way through the clip sounds like 97-5 WLLC. At Joker's Hill site nw of Toronto. I had DX centred on IN IL KY TN MI and OH. On Aug 20 at 0229 EDT

98.5 Jingle ID sounds like WORK, or maybe WOYK. I had Pittsburgh PA area as well as Ohio from my Joker's Hill site nw of Toronto. On Aug 21 at 1151 EDT

101.1 - Back at Toronto's Scarborough Bluffs, I had quote a few translators from western NY mixing in with WV western PA and eastern OH at this point. I nulled 101.1 Fort Erie ON and heard an ID that really sounds like "101.1 FM and 1350" followed by CBS Sports Radio programming. Nothing checks for a 1350 running parallel to a 101.1. I have considered a relay of WCCS in Homer City PA, but WCCS is on 1160. I suspect a translator of some kind, perhaps from western or central NY, or eastern OH or nw PA. Heard Sept 5 at 0239 EDT.

Clips below. Any leads or comments are appreciated, with thanks!

Somewhat limited with the db down again, but here are my comments:

    88.5, I don't hear either a 'WV' nor a "University of PA.
96.9 sounds more to me like "Amazing 96.9" but I don't find anything searching on that.
97.5 also sounds to me like "WLLC", but don't know who it is.
98.5 also sounds like WORK to me.
101.1 - I found a CBS Sports Radio list but it doesn't page through

88.5 does sound like "WXPN" at about the 0:03 mark, followed by "at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia" at about 0:05
96.9, definitely "Your summer never sounded hotter. All the hits..." But I'm not hearing a frequency like 96.9 or 97 in the jingle that follows. Sort of sounds like "Amazing Winding Shine" but that's nonsense. I do see there's a 96.9 in North Carolina that appears to go by "All the Hits".
97.5 also sounds like "WLLC" or maybe "WLLZ" Either way, nothing comes up.
98.5, I hear "WORK Workplace Radio" but nothing on Google about it. Might be an ad.
On 101.1, I think it might be saying 1340 rather than 1350. There is a CBS Sports Radio on 1340 with a 101.1 relay in western Colorado, though you weren't getting anything else at that distance so I'd be skeptical.

Thank you both for listening! I thought 1340 when I was live but struck me as 1350 with the headphones in my quiet office. Will give it another listen for 1340 and see ... I didn't find much with 1340 to help, though. Western CO is indeed safely ruled out. I hadn't heard 'in Philadelphia' but it is there pretty clear. Might have calls after that, too. Both before and after what is probably 'as service of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia' - if they are calls - are very weak, but I hear something that sounds like those calls. There is a sponsor I can't make out. My next step here is to listen live at that hour/day and see how they ID. I'll likely be in Philly next April for a journalism conference that I think might be hosted by/at that same university...

98.5 is indeed an ad, unfortunately... I've fallen for it as well. Targeted towards radio DXers, no doubt LOL. I'm stumped by all the others.

88.5 I certainly clearly hear University of Pennsylvania a few seconds in, but the rest of everything is rather muffled, sounding like you're recording on a separate device placed nearby a radio, losing all of the important audio. I can't understand the program name, which would obviously help a lot to match a schedule.

96.9 Well this is an annoying one to solve. The only station in the lower 48 that I see on that frequency with "_ 97" is WLAN. Perhaps listen to a stream and see if anything remotely matches that.

97.5 This one is 97-5 WONE I'm quite sure. I just looked around at most likely stations and once I saw WONE right there, now I can hear those calls. Otherwise, I was hearing WLSC and the like.

98.5 HA!!! I knew someone would hear that ad and think it was a jingle while DXing one of these big openings. I kept hearing the ad over and over and over again and was thinking "what a time to have that ad running during big openings like this."

101.1 I hear "on 101-1 and 13-15" as opposed to 1350. Note that WGRY runs CBS Sports Radio.

I hear "1310 AM". 101.1 + 1310 points to CJET-FM Smiths Falls, Ontario. Does this news/talk station have CBS SR programming?

Raymie: Thank you for catching the 1310 AM portion of the ID. The whole thing struck me as strange. '101.1 FM' was clear enough but I wondered why I didn't hear AM after what sounded like an AM frequency. Awesome going to work that one out! The most viable suggestion, to that point, were suggestions pointing to WCCS Homer City PA, which is 1160 and 101.1 and airs CBS Sports Radio. But the FM is a translator, and I was reluctant to log it on the assumption even though nothing else seemed to fit. A check of the 1310 schedule confirms it carries CBS Sports Radio overnight. It's on par with hearing Ottawa, and I had a bit of that. Much appreciated!

John and Chris, re 98.5: It does indeed sound like an ad. And now I won't be fooled again! Thanks!

Chris: No question 97.5 is WONE Akron OH. Nothing too unusual here, but I did have the area coming in during all that tropo. Re 96.9 - may have to hold onto that one and go through possibilities, perhaps listen to IDs. Have a feeling this one may be too muddled.

As for the 88.5, I am not going to bother logging it. It is most likely WRUR Rochester. We certainly hear 'University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia' very clearly a few seconds in, but thanks to Scott Fybush, who let me know via e-mail that "As for your 88.5, that certainly sounds like it should be WXPN - but remember that WXPN produces World Cafe, which runs all over the place (including on my WRUR 88.5)." The WRUR schedule doesn't list it as airing at the time I heard it, but promos for shows are common, and I did ID WRUR in the mix. Actually it's a small wonder I got anything outside of stations in Newmarket ON and Grimsby ON. So that gets kayoed.

Four out of five unIDs get resolved here. Nothing new, but at least fewewr ? marks in my logs. Thanks!!!

I started this last night... It stumped me... Now I'm fully invested.

I'm focusing on the 96.9. As I said in my now deleted post. I was very sure the announcer was iHeart. Someone mentioned WLAN... I looked it up... Sure enough... IHeart. The first song I listened to on their now playing has the same feel... Right track. Then the announcer lady. Boom.

I'm betting your answer is almost certain WLAN.

                  Youre welcome.

WLAN ... that's on the shorter end of MS distances here but it happens and would be new and welcome. I'm going to have to look into that. It'll help that I haven't listened to the clip in awhile ... I'll have fresh ears. Then I'll call the station. Thanks!
