6/23 97.7 "La Jefa" pirate? in Nuevo Laredo

Yesterday morning in San Antonio there was strong tropo from northern Mexico, and I heard a station on 97.7 playing regional Mexican music and IDing as "La Jefa" (see recording below).

I'm not able to find any official listing or call letters for this station or a listing for a 97.7 in Nuevo Laredo. However, La Jefa does have a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/LaJefaNuevoLaredo that has a link to a live stream.

I listened to the stream at TOH at two different hours but never heard any call letters. During one TOH, there was an announcement by Yuri Melendez. She has a profile on LinkedIn identifying her as the "Locutor Publicista" for the station.

Is this a pirate? Maybe a new station that is just on the air ahead of the formal station licensing?

    Hi Jim,

La Jefa is a pirate station from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. Using call letters that aren't assigned to them (fake calls) leads to a really quick way of getting shut down by the authorities, even if no other broadcasters have complained about them.

You might want to bookmark the Mexico pirate FM radio station website (divided up by state), which is compiled by Raymie Humbert >>> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...i7p59/pubhtml#

      Much appreciated, Jim.

I will definitely bookmark Raymie's site. In addition to helping ID pirate stations, it will give me some new DX targets.
