AUG 2023 MAJOR TROPO EVENT RESULTS

Needless to say, the tropo that occurred over the US from August 19 to August 22, 2023 was historic. Here in northeast Tennessee tropo is not common and when it happens it is usually under 300 miles (Nashville, Chattanooga, Lexington, KY). Prior to the mega tropo event just days ago, the largest tropo outbreak last occurred here in 2012 when I confirmed what was at the time my farthest tropo catch (101.1 KXIA Marshalltown, IA at 672 miles). This 2023 event eclipsed that 2012 opening by many orders of magnitude.
The first indication for me to pay attention was a post (on here I believe?) from a DXer that alerted others about a potential major tropo event due to the "heat dome". I checked out the Hepburn Tropo forecast and thought I'd better prepare. Here is a daily synopsis:

Saturday August 19: (late PM) Nashville, west KY, east AR, east MO stations began making their way in. I left antenna pointed wnw before going to sleep. Recorded eight frequencies overnight.

Sunday August 20: I awoke to see the APRS tropo map showing paths to my north and northeast. I managed to get a couple Ontario stations, Youngstown, OH and Wheeling, WV in the morning while middle TN and w KY was making it in throughout the day.

Monday August 21: A workday. When I went home on lunch I noticed Tr was really taking off to Michigan. By evening time conditions for long-haul tropo really took off towards the northwest. My tropo record fell several times during the evening and into the overnight. By midnight I had Tr to areas I had previously only ID'd by Sporadic E.

Tuesday August 22: I stayed up scanning the dials until 4:00am and woke up at 7:00 to continue DXing. This was historic, after all, so I called in to work. Long-haul stuff kept coming in until close to noon when Tr scaled back to only a few Ohio stations. By evening the FM dial was relatively normal.

Here is a list of confirmed stations by Tr in descending order according to distance:

Superb DX on an unbelievable multi-day tropo opening. I have to applaud you for having the stamina to chase all your DX.. I had a little taste of the here (Poughkeepsie, NY), but the signals were woefully weak and few and far between as I was on the very fringes of the "Red Blob". I did manage a new tropo state late on the 19th with WRVR-104.5 in Memphis, which co-incidentally has the same mileage as your farthest, KUQL in SD, at 974 miles. Early on the 22nd I added WEGW-107.5 "The Eagle" in WV at 378 miles, which interestingly you also heard.
How is the elevation at your DX location? Higher than surrounding terrain? How high above the ground is your antenna?
Congratulations on all your DX! We need another such tropo event in September!!!

It had been YEARS since I stayed up that late. The only thing that kept me from literally DXing all night was that I finally noticed the same strong stations hanging on and no new areas opening up. So I figured Tr was maxed out.

Since my post I have discovered a new long distance record. It's 93.3 KJRV Wessington Springs, SD at 983 miles. I also noticed we had same distances for longest Tr (974)! That was neat!

My elevation is about 1200 ft. Luckily I am located away from large hills and mountains, see attached images. The nearest "mountain" is about four miles away in the "west" image. Otherwise it's gently rolling hills and trees here.

My antenna is 15 to 20 feet on the mast.

Congrats to you as well! Hope we see another one soon even if it's not quite as strong as what we just had!

Wow, I've been reading everyone's posts from the past week - when I was out of town - so I missed out totally. Congrats to all!

I missed the chance to try out the new TEF 6686, although I am blocked from most directions by very close hills, other than to the E/NE and NW.

Late to reply to this, but WOW!! 1000+ mile tropo without the help of the gulf coast? Simply incredible! Congrats on those great catches!
