How I FM DX: this is not a competition to rack
up totals: I do not count stations, states, countries or anything. I
report what I hear with as much research as I can manage to identify,
but make no irrefutable claims without evidence. Each DX catch unID or
not is a potential learning experience. Always welcome ID help. I
don`t use an external antenna any more: I get plenty of DX on the
caradio; sometimes on a DX-398 where I can manipulate the telescopic
in real time vs nearby or DX CCI, which also has RDS capability.
These are all on caradio in garage which of course does have a STereo
indicator when activated. All times and dates are strictly UT. Main
reference the excellent WTFDA FM Database. Distances are km/statute
miles city-to-city, not site-to-site, from distancefromto.net Showing
them does not necessarily imply greater ID accuracy. I do not have
Internet access while DXing, no comparing with webstreams, nor even
consulting the FMDB. Nor do I make any recordings. I already have to
spend more time on post-research than during axual DX sessions.
These are excerpted from my weekly all-band log roundups via:
http://www.worldofradio.com/Hauserlogs.html
This report is all about sporadic E. I compile a separate report
concerning Oklahoma and groundwave/tropo from nearby states.
First major sporadic E FM DX opening of the
season, May 16 from 2259 UT past 0110 UT May 17, at least from
Campeche, Yucatán, Flórida:
As I am recording WORLD OF RADIO 2243 on Thursday afternoon May 16, I
check DXMAP and see an MUF spike of 109 MHz! east of here, so pause to
check DX in the car, which it turns out is coming from SE Mexico
instead:
99.3 at 2259, Spanish rap about ``los Federales``, fading up and down
to inaugurate our sporadic E FM DX season; 2301 something about ``pura
--- vida``, ``Exa FM 99.3``; 2305 ad for a móvil, in pesos, and for
Bancaya (sp?). Fringe KLOR Ponca City overridden, audible at fades.
2305 back to studio and WOR. 2330 next check a bit of English, ID with
``Front Row``, maybe something else. 2343 cancer PSA from Secretaría
de Salud, mention Isla Mérida. This must be XHMRA-FM in Mérida,
Yucatán, 91.488/91.488 kW ERP. How`s that for precision? There are two
other Exas on 99.3 beyond, in far Acapulco and Cd. Obregón. 2344 ad
for nationwide store El Soriano. After I take another break, now UT
May 17 at 0009, another ID as ``Exa FM 99.3``. 1893 km/1176 stmi
101.5 at 2302, Spanish JBA - got to be careful here, there are SS
closest to us both in OK and KS. But ID as 101.5 FM, something about
Península, and Mexican political ad. Surely XHYK-FM, Conkal, Yuc,
25/25 kW. Only other on an almost-island is in La Paz, BCS. Yes, at
0010 May 17, a Yucatán political ad. 1886/1172
105.9 at 2333, slogan ``más música que oye`` - not sure of last word;
and commercial for {sex} hormones, you don`t? hear on US radio. 0001
May 17, station or program name Balanza? News of looking for corpses
in a cold case of 10 years; ``Balance Media Globe`` sounds like
English, then ``Súper Stéreo 105.9`` and rock in English. These may be
two different stations. Besides being in the PTA, latter slogan leads
only right to XHFCY-FM, Kanasín, Yuc, 25/25 kW. No hits searching on
Balanza/Balance whatever. 1899/1180
100.1 at 2337, bit of Spanish vs 99.9 local LPFM. Based solely on PTA
= probable target area, of the 20 XH`s on 100.1, the only one in Camp
or Yuc is XHYU-FM, 7.5/7.5 kW in Mérida. 1893/1176
100.3 at 2337, a sign of Spanish. 2357 ad in Spanish, or rather PSA
from Secretaría de Salud, ad for Hot Sale, promo for program at 4 pm;
address in 24039 código postal, Campeche, XHMI 100.3 ID; 2359 TC, Son
las 6``. XHMI-FM 100.3 in San Francisco de Campeche, Camp, 39.8/39.8
kW. 1974/1227
97.3 at 2347, Spanish music, talk, 5:49 TC at 2349; 2351 R. Fórmula
ID; 2353 vote for PAN ad; 2355 Campeche ad, promo program at 8 am and
17 pm; ``Radio Fórmula Campeche 97.3 FM``. Slogan ID again at 0009.
This is XHRAC-FM, also in San Francisco de Campeche, 25/25 kW.
1974/1227
Following are UT May 17:
92.1 at 0005, music in mono overriding weak OK signal. Only one in
Yuc/Camp PTA is XHMYL-FM, Mérida, 2.85/2.85 kW. Not listed as mono and
a CHR format should be in stereo. But mono-mode info is woefully
incomplete. 1893/1176
94.5 at 0006, Spanish talk, nothing further. In PTA of Yuc/Camp there
are two in Yuc: XHVG-FM Mérida 10.0/10.0 kW; and XHMIN-FM, Tizimín
3.0/3.0 kW. Of course with Es we can make no assumptions based on
minor power differentials. 1947/1210 = Tizimín
95.3 at 0007, Spanish music fighting KOKC translator in OKC which
really gets out from a high tower. Enid 95.1 LPFM CP not yet on. Only
95.3 in Camp/Yuc is XHMH-FM, Mérida, 25/25 kW, Candela FM. Many of
these are familiar from previous openings. This one originating on AM
970 even had a SW relay on 6105, widely reported in 2009/2010y.
1893/1176
96.7 at 0008, dramatic Spanish, maybe an ad? Nothing further. Only
Camp/Yuc is XHESE-FM, Champotón, Campeche, 6.0/6.0 kW, Ke Buena.
2007/1247
I hate to miss any DX, but I also have to finish up WORLD OF RADIO
2243, so another break at 0011-0049, after which I`m getting Florida
instead:
101.5, still tuned here as I turn caradio back on, immediately at
0049, ``D101.5.com, Jaxonvil`` = really V101.5, WSOL-FM, Yulee FL,
100/100 kW. Yulee is just N of Jax on I-95. 1636/1017
94.3 at 0101, ``94.3 The Lake, WNFB, Lake City`` overcomes KSPI
Stillwater translator/Bott in KS. WNFB is 50/50 kW. L.C. is west of
Jax near I-10, almost halfway to Tallahassee. 1573/977
97.3 at 0104 mixing with Spanish remnant, Toyota in Ocala ad, 352 area
code ad. Trouble is, no such station in Ocala. Closest would be
Micanopy, N of Ocala on I-75 but closer to Gainesville: WSKY-FM, 50/50
kW. The only other FL fullpower, non-LP, non-translator 97.3 is in
Miami. Micanopy is a very small town, not even in my atlas index.
1642/1020
99.3 at 0107, ``Backstage Country`` program or promo. Again at 0110
and ``in the Valley``, ad for oysters & crawfish, so near a coast?
Can`t find any hit on the station list of the show originating in
Nashville:
https://backstagecountry.com/where-to-listen/
where the only 99.3 is apparently a translator in Hope AR of KBYB
101.7 Shreveport LA. Not likely, far from PTA and too close for Es.
99.3 at 0108, CCI maybe different station mentions Hampton Roads, i.e.
SE corner of VA, but the only 99.3 in the Norfolk area is a translator
in Virginia Beach, W257BV, The Time Machine Radio Network: doubtful
but possibly.
99.3 at 0109, ID as ``BIN 99.3`` i.e. Black Information Network. No
hits on the DB anywhere for BIN abbr. or in full. Only one in
https://www.binnews.com/stations/
is Montgomery, presumably AL, but own website never reveals callsign!
https://montgomery.binnews.com/
but that would be W257DS, translator of WMGY-800, ``Praise 96.5`` with
gospel music as also outdated? listed in the NRC AM Log. Is there
another Montgomery anywhere with a radio station on anyfrequency FM?
Yes, NY, WV, IN, but none on 99.3 nor BIN! We do know that BIN claims
99.3 in Mont`y AL due to weather info on website. 1492/927
Opening still going as I have to quit and finish up WOR! I would
certainly appreciate any help in sorting out and IDing these 99.3s.
And any other uncertain ones above.
Finally a sporadic E FM DX opening now at the peak? of the
season; standard boilerplate applies about my methods and objectives
of DXing. All times and dates strictly UT, June 17:
90.1 at 2127 UT, I have KUCO classical music in the background on the
DX-392 when it`s overcome by a pledge drive from WGCU; 2130 ATC, 2132
cut to WGCU news about Fort Myers. It`s only 4.4/4.4 kW. Then I head
for the caradio! 1866 km/1160 stmi
93.1 at 2137, 2154, 2204, dead air in $tereo as I have been hearing
lately, maybe not Es, but like Es, it fades out completely between
full-quieting peaks. If it`s a FL PTA as above, there are only two
full-powers in state, WFEZ Miami, 98/98 kW; and WKRO-FM Port Orange,
24.5./24.5 kW, way up next to Daytona Beach. Is anyone aware of a
deadair 93.1 anywhere?
From listings in WTFDA and Radio-locator, you might conclude 93.1 be
merely K226BR, Enid, 250/250 watt translator of KIMY 93.9. It`s been
off the air for years! In May *2013* I said it had been gone for a few
weeks; but apparently still licensed, and its dead air would correlate
with the deadair on KIMY, but hardly a constant local signal. Only
other Okies on 93.1 are KWLB Red Oak 19.5/19.5 kW, but way off in the
SE near Wilburton; and K226CW, 170/170 watt translator in Stillwater,
of KOKP 1020, Perry, Triple Play Sports. Now that could be it.
Stillwater: 80/50
93.5 at 2140, ``Revolution 9-3-5``, i.e. WBGF Belle Glade FL, 24/24
kW. Alludes to dance format, not politix! 1950/1212
94.5 at 2142, hard rock on a frequency `open` for DX, not much around
here. The three full-powers in FL are WARO Naples 99/99 kW, classic
rock; WFLF-FM Parker 100/100 kW, rock; and WCFB Daytona Beach 97.5/100
kW, urban AC. Naples is the one closest to 93.5 Belle Glade, 2 minutes
ago and to Ft Myers, 1 minute later. Parker is allegedly near Pánama
City, way up in the panhandle per map key altho I don`t see it.
Naples: 1902/1182
95.3 at 2143, rock, ``95-3 The Beach``: that`s WOLZ Fort Myers, 79/79
kW. 1866/1160
103.5 at 2148, ``Power 103.5``, fakeout, is merely KVSP Anadarko OK.
Despite a hot summer afternoon, I`m also faked out by above average,
near-local levels from Ponca and Wichita on 98.7, 99.3, 104.7.
99.3 at 2145, Spanish vs KLOR Ponca City, with a 1-800 number so
likely USA station. This could well be WWCN, Fort Myers Beach, 45/45
kW. In the PTA and the only 99.3 FL SS.
1868/1161
92.7 at 2152, mention US1 and Key West ad: so it`s WEOW 100/100 kW.
2022/1256
After a break, I check again at 2312, but no Es DX.
DXMAP shows FM DX sporadic-E nexus over eastern Arkansas, a
bit too close to be effective here, but check it out in the car
anyway, June 21 at 1716 UT. Isolated signal on 94.5 fading way in and
completely out several times, ad for romanocars.com in Syracuse, and
also Fayetteville, various brands: unseems two different stations, so
is there a Syracuse in NC, likely direxion beyond AR? NO, but
Fayetteville is a suburb of Syracuse NY! 1724 another ad mentioning
Syracuse. So it is per WTFDA FMDB:
WYYY 94.5 SYRACUSE NY 100.0 kW 198.0m 42-56-46 76-07-07 Y94 The 80s To
Now Adult Hits ADULT CONTEMPORARY
I see that I have also logged WYYY the past two summers. Total
bandscanning bottom to top does not find any other likely Esignals. I
take a break and resume at 1800, after DXMAP as of the hour until 1748
had the major nexus over central Illinois, which is just about right
for midway to Syracuse. 1993 km/1239 miles
93.9 at 1800, Meximx briefly CCI to Watonga which is still modulating.
Surely not KWDW-LP, OKLAHOMA.
95.3 at 1801, CCI to KOKC translator says ``Saratoga County, New
York`` - unless it was mentioned on KOKC CBS news itself. Not enough
to go on, but I investigate: there is only one station more than 1 kW
in this part of NY besides LI, on opposite side of Adirondax from
Saratoga County, and not too far from Syracuse in another direxion:
WLFK 95.3 GOUVERNEUR NY 6.0 kW 100.0m 44-20-22 75-24-00 COUNTRY THE
WOLF 95.3
2085 km/1296 miles.
Saturday June 22, I`m not up and checking DXMAP until 1530
UT when I see a huge mess of sporadic E FM DX lines across
central/eastern USA with MUF above 100 MHz. So I hasten to check on
the DX-398 inside:
94.5 at 1534, ad mentioning the beach, ``Q-94`` non ID; RDS shows
SABRINA_, later FEATHER_, i.e. music refs, not ID. So it is:
WRVQ 94.5 RICHMOND VA 200.0 kW 109.0 m 37-24-15 77-18-55 HD Title &
Artist on Q94 CONTEMPORARY HIT RADIO Q-94 -- 1817 km/1129 mi
If it were merely Q94 the only hit on 94.5 would be Harlingen TX by
searching the Slogan field. So is there a hyphen in the VA one or not?
Stations should be required to utter ``dash`` or ``hyphen`` if that`s
the case. And look at that power, twice the normal 100 kW limit. How
did they pull that off? Richmond is inland, not on a beach.
Re FM DX log of WRVQ 94.5, Greg Hardison replies: ``I
checked the WRVQ entry on Radio-Locator, and sho' 'nuff, it jives out
there as 200 kW! I expected a bit of Corporate-Radio BS, perhaps
counting 100 kW twice, as in H + V modulation. So then checked it on
the FCC FM Query page: same deal, logging in at 200 kW. Apparently it
must pay to have connections, hi hi! And it's no real surprise to hear
a spot mentioning "the Beach". Much of my family's from that part of
the planet, and there is a good amount of commercial-and-leisure
trans-traffic up & down I-64 between Richmond and the Hampton Roads
area; much more so than one sees between Rchmd and D.C., which is only
about forty miles further away. As for the "ad" on the Liberty Univ.
Outlet, remember, the RW extremists are above any mere laws, so if
they are not divinely struck down while airing commercials below 92
MHz, then it must be all good! :^)> :^)>``
A few FM stations, notably in Michigan, were ``grandfathered`` in with
excessive powers. I just went thru all 634 MI stations in WTFDA FMDB,
and found only these super-powers:
93.7 320/320 kW ERP WBCT Grand Rapids
104.3 190/190 kW ERP WOMC Detroit
105.7 265/265 kW ERP WSBW Grand Rapids
And of the 515 VA stations, only one other >100/100 kW ERP:
99.1 190.9/190.9 kW ERP WSLQ Roanoke
I wonder if they acquired over-powered transmitter(s?) and/or greater
antenna gain? But especially how they justified greater coverage than
competitors.
94.9 at 1535, ad for Lowe? Fibre Internet, City of Roanoke VA PSA:
WSLC-FM 94.9 ROANOKE VA 95.5 kW 598.0 m 37-11-50 80-09-11 949 STAR -
Now Playing Title/Artist COUNTRY STAR COUNTRY 94.9 -- 1597 km/992 mi
95.3 at 1537, ads for Colonial Williamsburg, Kia; Virginia Repertory
Theater, Amelia County Fair; ``New Country K-95``:
WKHK 95.3 COLONIAL HEIGHTS VA 47.0 kW 156.0 m 37-26-22 77-26-01 K95!
Title & Artist on New Country K95! COUNTRY K-95
If it were merely K95, the only hit on 95.3 would be Willmar MN by
searching the Slogan field. So is there a hyphen in the VA one or not?
Stations should be required to utter ``dash`` or ``hyphen`` if that`s
the case. Amelia County is west of C.Hts., SW of Richmond. 1822 km / 1132 mi
Then I move to the caradio, but the opening is almost finished:
88.3 at 1550, Liberty University mentioned, and several times, ``The
Journey``, commercial mentioning central Virginia; isn`t this the NCE
sub-band?:
WRVL 88.3 LYNCHBURG VA 28.0 kW 346.0 m 37-11-50 79-21-06 RELIGIOUS
TEACHING THE JOURNEY Liberty University -- 1667 km / 1036 mi
104.5 at 1605, WTER mentioned, and another station, probably referring
to gospelhuxter net members rather than this frequency, which may only
be normal fringer KZZW Mooreland OK. But WTER is not a valid FM or AM
call anywhere.
Nothing more to 1630 when I have just missed confirming WOR on WRN. At
1635 DXMAP shows the Es nexus has been over SE Missouri.
Until the next, Best of DX and 73 de Glenn
