    FM DX to Enid OK

** U S A. After two days of tropo TVDX within huge blob extending from
Monterrey to Des Moines, I switch to FM DXing via my best option,
stock Nissan caradio in the cool garage on our first 90-degree day
this year; with fender-mounted vertical antenna only.

This is my first serious car FM DX session this year, and maybe since
last summer, so there may have been some changes to the ``local`` dial
too. Info from the great WTFDA FM Database. Numbers before the geo
coordinates are kW ERP and antenna height above average terrain in
meters - H&V all the same in today`s logs so deleted the duplications.
Distances in km/stmi are approx., city-to-city of license, computed by
    distancefromto.net.

100.3, May 6 at 1653 UT, adstring including Staples, ``KJKK-FM
Dallas-Fort Worth`` ID. This stays in for quite a while, yet several
other open Metroplex channels are unoccupied - or maybe too occupied
resulting in hash. By 1747 this is gone but a few words from somewhere
    burst in via a meteor.

96.7, May 6 at 1655 UT, mentions something sponsored by WBAP & WFAA -
as if they were still related; 972 AC for Best Buy windows. 1711, ad
for Triple-C Roofing in DFW. I don`t perceive it as ``all-sports`` but
    therefore must be:

    104.5, May 6 at 1702 UT, ``Weekend Top 20 Countdown`` but of Christian
songs only, no ID; ad for Metashare? 844-74-BIBLE; vacation rentals in
Florida; finally multi-station IDs including KJIL and KHYM. I figured
this would be the newish station near Woodward, but last I heard, it
had not been acquired by the SW KS-based gospel huxter network:

106.9, May 6 at 1705 UT, rap in unknown language, not English or
Spanish; but 1707 quick English non-ID as ``K-Hits``, So:

104.9, May 6 at 1714 UT, Midwest City OK ad from KKWD alternately
    fading with South Asian YL mixing language in with accented English;
even a bit of play-by-play cricket! 1735 mentions Punjabi and Urdu, ad
with (972) AC; 1736 S Asian song. I try searching WTFDA DB first on
languages, but there is a drop-down menu of only certain ones, no
Urdu. Punjabi, Indian and Pakistani do not get any 104.9 hits
anywhere. I know it has to be DFW TX market, so geographically I soon
find this entry not citing any specific languages:

    96-57-34 534B KZMP-FM 104.9 Pilot Point, Dallas, Fort Worth

I never heard Funasia mentioned: this one in Dallas proper could be
    problematic if it really exist:

BTW, I still haven`t heard the alleged EWTN station in Ringwood just
west of Enid, KEUC, 100 watts, 21 meters on 104.9. I should be getting
it easily like the 99 watts from Kingfisher below on 105.3. 33 km/20

105.3, May 6 at 1737 UT, YL sports talk, ``CBS Sports Radio`` ID, huge
adstring, none local, including Rangers.com, Navy Federal Credit
Union. It`s merely a near-local from a town where they assault HSFB
players leading to a mega$ lawsuit; and I don`t think it was CBSSR the
    last time I noticed:

      ** U S A [and non]. Another sporadic-E FM DX opening, Wednesday May 31
at 1521-1625 UT, from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario. It`s
taken me a couple days to get this compiled and researched as
Thursdays are busy WOR produxion day. Es FM DX: gotta take it whenever
it decides to happen! In the not yet hot garage, on the Nissan Sentra
2004 stock caradio with fender vertical antenna only; all logs in real
time with my own ears, no RDS capability, no recording, no internet
for stream comparisons; but research later from my scribbled notes,
mainly the WTFDA FM Database, also in general searching if needed. All
times strictly UT! Numbers just before geo coordinates are kW ERP and
antenna height above average terrain in meters. Identical horiz and
vert figures, u.o.s. Last figures are distances in km/stmi
      city-to-city so approx., not site-to-city, from distancefromto.net.
Showing distance does not necessarily make a log more definite, but
FYI. I do not count stations, states or anything, what`s `new` or not,
and am not in a competition. Each DX log I view as a potential
      learning experience. Clarifications, correxions welcome.

Canadian logs are included in original time order below, and also
duplicated at separate entry under CANADA.

Unlike the FL opening yesterday, many frequencies are 2 or 3 stations
deep vying for captures; many with confusing fringe-area groundwave
signals fading in and out like ionospheric. I include some of those
for completeness or to reconfirm identities.

92.1 at 1521, rock: not even attempting to narrow down; also CCI on
      93.7 vs Okie.

94.5 at 1523, partial ID as ``point 5...US`` - nothing fits in the
PTA = probable target area as later determined. Maybe this too-weak
fringe and the US was really House? A multi-channel gospel huxter

        ** U S A [and non]. Another sporadic-E FM DX opening, Saturday June 10
from 1652 to 1926 UT. Starts with isolated opening from Utah, soon
lots of Mexicans from Yucatán, Campeche, at least. I start at 1630 UT
as area tropo is also up from KS, OK with some stations not normally
audible, into north Texas, which means more QRM than usual on `open`
DX frequencies. Such non-Es logs are included, to note or reconfirm
branding. To boot, two major local signals from Enid are off the air:
        95.7 and 107.1!

Es FM DX: gotta take it whenever it decide to happen! In the not too
hot garage, on the Nissan Sentra 2004 stock caradio with fender
vertical antenna only, so no antenna manipulation but disfavoring any
horizontal-only stations, if any; all logs in real
time with my own ears, one frequency at a time, no RDS capability, no
recording, no internet for stream comparisons; but research later from
my scribbled notes, mainly the excellent WTFDA FM Database, also in
        general searching if needed.

All times strictly UT! Numbers just before geo coordinates are kW ERP
and antenna height above average terrain in meters. Identical horiz
and vert figures, u.o.s. Last figures are distances in km/stmi
        city-to-city so approx., not site-to-city, from distancefromto.net.
Showing distance does not necessarily make a log more definite, but
FYI. This time I bother with distances only for the Mexicans.

I do not count stations, states or anything, what`s `new` or not,
and am not in a competition. Each DX log I view as a potential
        learning experience. Clarifications, correxions welcome.

** CANADA. Replies to my inquiry how to pronounce that town in Ontario
I DXed on 96.5 FM, also mentioned on WOR 2194:

``On your program you reported hearing the CBC French station from
Penetanguishene ON. Great DX catch. I lived up in that area for
several years and used to listen to it often. I don't understand any
French but some of the musical programs were good.

The pronunciation of the town's name is sort of like this.
Pena - tang - guishene (rhymes with machine) - Doug Brown, London
        ON``

``Hi Glenn, Vern from Toronto here. I’ve recently returned to
SWL/DX’ing after a lengthy absence. Sad to find that so many beloved
stations are now gone, but gratified that you’re still doing your
excellent work. Enjoyed the program back in the ‘70s and am enjoying
        it now!

Anyway, it’s pronounced peh-na-TANG-wish-een. Often shortened by
locals to Penetang (PEH-na-tang). Listen, here:
        upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0b/Penetanguishene.ogg

I’ve never been there, because I don’t drive and public transport to
small towns in Ontario is practically non-existent. It looks quite
picturesque, though. Amazing that you heard an FM station from there
in Oklahoma! Best regards, Vern Nicholson`` (via Glenn Hauser, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Finally in my spare? time after a full week, I
have completed compiling and researching my sporadic E FM DX openings
on Sunday June 11, into UT Monday June 12. Partly on caradio, partly
on DX-398 inside. There was considerable overlap from different PTAs:
            probable target areas. From GA/SC/NC/VA/MD/KY; OH/WV/ON/MI/WI;
MN/MB/ND/SK/MT. Also included are nearby OK logs encountered along the
            way.

Es FM DX: gotta take it whenever it decide to happen! In the not too
hot garage, on the Nissan Sentra 2004 stock caradio with fender
vertical antenna only, so no antenna manipulation but disfavoring any
horizontal-only stations, if any; all logs in real time with my own
ears, one frequency at a time, no RDS capability, no recording, no
internet for stream comparisons; but research later from my scribbled
notes, mainly the excellent WTFDA FM Database, also in general
            searching if needed.

Showing distance does not necessarily make a log more definite, but
            FYI.

I do not count stations, states or anything, what`s `new` or not, and
am not in a competition. Each DX log I view as a potential learning
            experience. Clarifications, correxions welcome.

** U S A. Another Es FM DX opening June 14, on caradio but very
marginal. Several Esish signals lead to dead ends, i.e. Kansas
fringefaders as if they were Es. I`ll spare us some of that research,
but not all of it. Standard methodology boilerplate as in my June 11
report, including: all times strictly UT:

88.3 at 1714, mentions Leesburg? which is in N VA, NW of WDC. Nothing
there; I now think it was probably Lynchburg as in later 88.3 log
              below.

93.1 at 1716, jobs in Reno County, but merely Kansas, then McPherson
              ad, My 93.1 weather.

93.1 at 1717, Wilmington ad, so this time is NC: Unlikely as it may
seem, this is the only Wilmington with a 93.1, 97-watt LPFM:
WBPL-LP 93.1 WILMINGTON NC RELIGIOUS TEACHING WILMINGTON CATHOLIC
              RADIO 0.097 30.0 34-12-35 77-56-53 1821 km/1132 stmi
Broadly, there are Wilmington FMs in these states: DE, IL, NC, OH, PA,
              VT. Comparing
rough coordinates, there are no 93.1s in any of these near a
              Wilmington.

88.3 at 1726, Cardinals BB play-by-play, what? MLB is VERY commercial.
              Can`t imagine a non-comm with it. // local 1390 KCRC; hmmm, could be a
mixing/overload product? 89.7 is not local but almost; minus 1.4 MHz =
              88.3. But 88.3 is fading some unlike 89.7 or 1390. Again at 1834 //
              1390 then f/out.

93.1 at 1742, BB pbp but not // Cardinals KCRC 1390. Ads lead merely
to Hutchinson KS. Guess what, there are NO Cards stations in KS, but

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. Possibility of some sporadic E DX, June 23 at
1900 UT, so a quick check in the car. Instead some area tropo
                inbringing stations not normally heard:

97.3 at 1903 UT, ``Q97, 97.3`` and country. Punxuation is everything

between Norman and Chickasha, and doubt it serves the NE side very
well. They have several other stations, including the imaginary? one

not even have one staff member or another constantly monitoring for
dead air or any other problem, even if automated, and/or a
silence-sensor alarm, how can they expect any listeners to stick with

licensing, especially if there be any other/better demand for the

not just music when they manage to modulate. It`s just over the OK/KS
frontier. This one is also unusual in that it`s full power and
vertically polarized only, as the 0.0 means kW ERP-H and the 96.0
means kW ERP-V. Maybe that`s why I hear it better on the caradio.

could also be that a person on duty at station collapsed or worse. IF
they have any local listeners, might call 911 and/or get the police to

With the proliferation of Part 15 very low-power RF feeders in cars,

On the contrary, all programming originates at KUCO, fed to its two
satellites KCSC 95.9 in Woodward and KBCW 91.9 in McAlester. Perhaps
confused because the original call of 90.1 was KCSC - for Central
State College, not to be confused with something in Chico, California.
Some years after the school was renamed University of Central
Oklahoma, the 90.1 calls were changed in accordance. By then had also
acquired the relay facility on 95.9 in Woodward from KCCU Lawton, so
as a legacy, KUCO applied the KCSC calls to that. Standard legal IDs
used to add HD1 to 90.1 and 91.9 but not to 95.9; now dispensed with
that. IIRC, HDs of 90.1 include some totally unrelated gospel huxter

Note that this goes back almost 8 years! Blowing up a coverage map,
site is just north of deadend intersexion of 6th Street and Short
                    Street inside Ringwood.

0134 UT recheck, Yikes has faded and now there is a mix of music and
gospel huxter? With Tulsa area signals enhanced, could be one of
these, the only other Okies with more than peanut-power:

About time for a jaunt into the country anyway, we decide to visit the
KEUC site and see/hear what may be there, on Saturday afternoon, July
                    8. Ringwood is quite a small town, but with a neat very well-stocked
grocery store, Richard`s, carrying items unfound in big Enid, another
reason for an excuse to visit.

From 1850 UT, driving west on US 412/60 tuned to 104.9 starting with
KKWD fringe if anything. By the time we get to Meno at 1911, an open
carrier in mono is starting to capture 104.9, and sure enough it`s
`local` in Ringwood. We easily find the site where Short Street [N/S]
deadends at 6th Street [E/W]: it`s the Ringwood municipal water tower,
one of those slim cylinders -- and it has antennas on it, violating
Separation Of Church And State. Still nothing but dead air, but I
never detected even that from Enid. Of course the coverage area with
100 watts is rather limited, and maybe if there be tropo, bigger
stations are still going to block it.

Bewaring a big white poodle which takes it upon itself to protect KEUC
with menacing charges and barx, but apparently blongs to an adjacent
trailer-house, we inspect the facility. There is a vertically
polarized 4- or 5-element yagi about halfway up the tower on the
`wrong` side of it, southwest, and pointed away from Enid. Two cables
run up the tower, past this antenna to the very top where there may be
                    some other very small antenna.
                    https://www.w4uvh.net/KEUC_104.9_Ringwood2.jpg

Maybe that`s for STL reception from somewhere. None of the other OCR
stations are close or powerful enough to provide a direct off-air
pickup for relay and there is no satellite dish. Or they could be
depending on internet feed with no way or desire to reboot it
                    remotely.

Adjacent is the transmitter shack, with a faded almost illegible
warning on the door that it`s a FEDERAL OFFENSE to disturb it, but no
identity as KEUC, OCR or anything. An OG&E electric meter on the side
is running. There is also a propane tank right next to it - would that
convert to emergency electric power, or just keep the transmitter from
                    freezing?
                    https://www.w4uvh.net/KEUC_104.9_Ringwood1.jpg
In any event, it`s all for naught as long as the air be dead. And back
in Enid I won`t be able to tell if and when it come to life. I can`t
help but wonder if the neighbor or any other Ringwoodians be aware
                    what this thing is for.

Altho the WTFDA FM DB as above has correct info for KEUC, as far as it
goes, you would never know it`s part of the Oklahoma Catholic Radio
network, nor some of the others on their station list, just
``religious teaching`` - not always with real city of license.
                    https://www.okcr.org/stations
One can go thru it and figure out which stations serve which city,
e.g. Walters south of ``Lawton``. We also see that there are *three*
LP stations on 99.3 in the OKC area, one of which must be one of OCR`s
two Spanish outlets. And there are *five* around OKC on 97.7. It`s
really getting crowded (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

Showing distance does not necessarily make a log more definite, but
                      FYI.

I do not count stations, states or anything, what`s `new` or not, and
am not in a competition. Each DX log I view as a potential learning

As happens too often, instead of Es in the ~1000 mile range, I`m
getting tropo from no further than Shreveport, but still plenty of DX!
No Es until the fourth session, and only one definite log at the end

be transfade to anotherstation. Later I search on RADIO BINGO 88.1 and
discover that this is mainly a Canadian thing. CJWE in Alberta is part
of a province-wide network of RB, but dates of games do not include
                        this one.

Another one is CFRH in Ontario, claiming it`s bilingual bingo, but
obviously French is primary. I heard no hint of anything Canadian,
certainly not francophone. Furthermore, it`s not resuming until
                        September.

Another2 one is in Perth ON, Lake 88.1 = CHLK-FM. But it`s Tuesdays at
6:10 pm. Further down the search results are too many other stations,
some of which may have only bingoed years ago, or not really on 88.1:
WYPR, KDHX, WWER, CKBW, KJCB, KBTL, KDNK, CHEC, CKBI, CJEC. Not really
worth deep searches into all of those for a bingo show right now. Does
anyone know of a station, even in America, that calls bingo on a

92.5, OKC, where no one listens to it. What a silly branding, edge of
what, alluding to HD2? On 92.9 one never knows which fringer will
dominate in Enid, this with a bit of tropo, or KBEZ Tulsa, equally
stupid branding, ``The Drive`` -- of what? 100 kW without any boost.
Not to be outdone, the 92.9 in Kansas, Osage City, KMXN, if not really

** OKLAHOMA. 101.5, Aug 15 at 1708 UT, as far as I can tell, KOCD
Okeene still dead air, weak signal with occasional airplane surges, or
MS burst QRM. But also traces of another fringer. In OK there are
three translators and another Spanish, 6.2 kW in Collnsville; while
Kansas has three non-translators, most likely another Spanish, KSMM
Liberal, which I caught July 12 q.v., despite WTFDA DB *still* listing
it as silent since 4/28/22 due to xmtr failure which was/is? 100 kW

Okeene, as has been since at least Aug 9.

on caradio, so maybe KOCD Okeene have resumed modulation? No, soon ad
in English for United Internet in SW Kansas, Liberal ad, mentions
103.9? No KSpanish listed there: must have been ``93.9`` which bears
KZRD Dodge City, 100 kW ``La Mexicana`` per WTFDA FM DB.

And 101.5 is: KSMM, 100 kW ``La Mexicana`` in Liberal, allegedly relay
of: KMML 92.9 but 101.5 still Remarked as: ``Silent 4/28/22; xmtr
failure``. ! But there is no 92.9 called KMML! The only 92.9 KS is
KMXN, 42 kW in Osage City, not ``MeXicaN`` as it may have been
previously, but Country, ``The Bull``! KMML calls instead apply to
                            102.1, 40 kW ``La Mexicana`` in Cimarrón KS.

What a mess!! I logged and pointed out this anomaly several weeks ago,
but WTFDA still has not cleared it up. Liberal is 281 km = 173 stmi
away, so really fringe. Cimarrón is strategically located about
halfway between the Cities Dodge and Garden. Not to be confused with
the Cimarrón in NM; I don`t find a C-town in OK but names the
westernmost county at the end of Nomansland. Liberal is right on the
OK Panhandle border, but radio-locator shows 101.5 site is definitely
                            in KS, ENE of Liberal.

But what about KOCD? As I drive down the road a bit, lose Liberal and
there`s the dead air in $tereo dominant from Okeene, as it has been
since at least August 9. Cursory chex on Aug 26 & 27 had not heard it
so wondered if off completely (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 101.5, random times afternoon of Sept 1 on caradio,
cannot be sure KOCD Okeene even be on air, let alone any $tereo
deadair. Briefly heard some commercial-sounding Spanish, presumably
the Liberal KS fringer (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [non]. 101.5, Sept 6 at 2018 UT, on caradio, fringe signal
pops in long enough to be Spanish with 620 area code, therefore
Liberal KS. In further driving around today and last several days, not
detecting any $tereo dead air in Spanish, so KOCD Okeene seems to
remain totally off the 101.5 air, which is fine since they were unable
to modulate it (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 101.5, Sept 8 circa 1820 UT on caradio around
Enid, seems to be slight quieting but no Spanish; no stereo pilot
either, so if KOCD Okeene, either turned off $ or just too weak to
fire. Later circa 1830 at a certain sweet spot, getting JBA Spanish
talk show about finances, more likely KSMM Liberal KS than religious
                            KOCD?

No, it isn`t: KSMM format is regional Mexmx and even sort of a program
sked on website: ``12 PM – 4 PM Monday - Friday Erica Majalca ”La

Sic, sporadically accented. Sez both 101.5 and its primary on 93.9
went off the air in January 2023. So what were we hearing since then

Hmmm, there is another Okie in Spanish I had not previously
considered, just north of Tulsa, a lot closer than Liberal KS, but a

miles north of Enid, I stick mostly to this frequency trying to
ID/sort out the fringe Spanish. Mostly unreadable, traces of Mexmx,
but a couple momentary peaks at 1915 and 1921 say `La Mexicana`, ergo
KSMM Liberal KS and not either Okie. Thataway there is more ACI from
101.3 Wichita (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

                              ** U S A. 101.5, Sept 13 at 1955 UT on caradio, bits of Spanish and
partial ID as ``Mexicana ... y 93.9``, so of course it is again KSMM
Liberal KS which is also on 93.9 Dodge City KZRD --- not a relay of
92.9 KMML as there is no such station tho still shown that way in
                              WTFDA FM DB for 101.5.

Still no longer hearing any dead air in $tereo on 101.5, as per
numerous logs in August, which I assumed was out of my nearest, KOCD
Okeene. But of course never heard ID; could have confirmed only by
driving closer to Okeene, but R. Salvación website claims it and its
own LP primary on 93.9 in OKC had both gone off the air in January. So
if true, the DA might have been from the other Okie in Collinsville
near Tulsa. Or a remote possibility, an abandoned Part 15 RF feeder in
some parked car or residence in Enid, no input but left turned on. I
doubt this because of its wide range in town, not just around home
                              QTH.

In July I had a 101.5 log from KSMM and explained the confusion
between 92.9 & 93.9. At least since then, the ``silent`` notation
disappeared from 101.5 in the WTFDA DB. Except for a log in June on
101.5 also referring to 93.9 which I assumed was the OK pair rather
than KS, I had not had an Okeene 101.5 log since July of 2022,
including none since January 2023 -- tho as a semi-local would not
have paid much attention to it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 101.5, Sept 18 at several chex on caradio around Enid,
circa 19, 20 and 21 UT, dead air in $tereo, again at original level
like months ago leading me to conclude it has to be KOCD Okeene
transmitter, altho R. Salvación claimed to have gone off the air last
January. It`s not local level, but plenty to dominate any signs of
further 101.5s. Once back at home QTH I try the DX-398 with RDS
capability, but not enough signal to display that icon if unlikely in
                              use, nor even stereo icon.

May have to take the time and trouble to drive the ~80 mile roundtrip
to Okeene, SW of Enid, to be sure. One FCC map indicates site is right
in center of town, slightly NW of junxion of state hwys 8 & 51; but
another shows it on east side, just north of hwy 51 and just east of
N2660 Rd. The 60 dbu contour of 14 kW does not reach Enid.

Digging further at FCC, I see nothing about it being off the air, nor
having been a relay of the 93.9 LPFM in OKC. In fact, guess what, the
main studio of record is in Liberal KS! Where there is another station
on 101.5 I have been getting:

                              ``LICENSED

** OKLAHOMA. 101.5, Sept 19 at 1500 UT on caradio, again dead air with
stereo icon, presumed KOCD. Recheck at 1703 on DX-398 with telescopic
antenna only and at ground level, now enough signal for RDS icon and
to display: KOCD-FM_ static! So now it`s 100% certain that all this DA
has been from the Okeene station which supposedly went off the air
last January. At this time RDS worx, but not enough signal for $tereo
                              icon (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

                              ** U S A. 104.3, Sept 20 at 1952 UT, `B 104-3 The Point``, and rock.
Don`t ever hear this back in Enid, with 104.1 OKC adjacent, but 25 km
north on expedition, no problem; WTFDA FM DB: ``KVGB-FM 104.3 GREAT
